Message from our Interim Principal

Hello Tolt families!

I hope this message finds you well. As we approach the end of May, I wanted to provide a brief update on the happenings at our school.

We are two-thirds of the way through state testing! Our Math and English Language Arts portions of the Smarter Balanced Assessment are complete. We have our state 8th grade science assessment scheduled for next week. This assessment will be completed during our regularly scheduled 8th grade science classes. Thank you for supporting us and your student through the testing season.

I am going to share something you may already know. We have the best PTSA! We are so grateful for the partnership we have with our PTSA in serving the needs of our students. We felt honored and humbled by our Staff Appreciation Week last week. We are extremely lucky to work alongside our PTSA.

We are fast approaching the end to our school year. Plans for celebrating the accomplishments of our 8th grade class are in the works. Continued communication about the Moving Up Ceremony, 8th Grade Field Trip, and 8th Grade Dance will be coming from Tolt and PTSA.

Thank you for your continued partnership. Let's make the most of the remaining weeks as we finish the school year strong!

Go Bears!

Scott Petersen, Interim Principal

Tolt Highlight

Chalk Mural

The English Language Development classes have been exploring the essential question of whether graffiti is street art or vandalism. Throughout the unit, they have read and discussed informational text, interviewed two street artists, watched videos and viewed images of various street art, and engaged in a hands-on project in which they created their own public street art in the form of a chalk mural at Tolt Middle School. Local street artist Joe Lee Davidson guided the students as they co-created a quilt mural depicting their cultural/personal identity.

Special 8th Grade Science Guest Speaker

As our 8th grade science students were learning about the space industry, they had a unique opportunity to learn from an experienced rocket scientist and engineer. Brent Hernandez is a parent in our community who works at Aerojet Rocketdyne. He taught our students about some of the different kinds of rockets his company makes and some of the exciting missions and programs he has been involved with. He also talked about choosing a career that aligns with your passion, the importance of diversity of thought within a team, and to be unafraid of failure and trying new things. Our students asked great questions and some students expressed interest in pursuing internships within the space industry. His presentation was interesting, educational, inspiring and entertaining! Thank you, Brent, for dedicating your time and sharing your experiences with our students!

Healthy Summer Times!

Summer is the perfect time to make an appointment with your healthcare provider. If your student has a life-threatening health condition, takes medication at school, has asthma, etc. you will be receiving paperwork in the mail over the summer to update. Make sure all paperwork is completed and turned in by Thursday, August 31, 2023. According to Washington State Law, students with life-threatening conditions are to have medication and/or treatment orders and an Emergency Care Plan in place prior to the first day of school.

The Tdap booster is a required 7th grade immunization. Your student MAY NOT attend the first day of school without obtaining the Tdap booster prior to 7th grade.

Changes to State Immunization Rules:

  • All students must be up-to-date on required immunizations, or have a Certificate of Exemption on file before August 31, 2023.
  • All immunization records for new students must be medically verified.

For more information on changes to Washington State’s Immunization rules, please visit this link.

You are welcome to start turning in medications and paperwork as soon as our office re-opens on Monday, August 21. Nurse Rachel will have a table at Tolt’s Back-to-Business day on Monday, August 28, and you are welcome to turn in items then and check if anything is missing!

New 6th Grade Families: it is so helpful for me to have the most up-to-date health information for your student as they are new to me and Tolt. Please take a moment to complete the annual health form so I have the most current information for your student!

End of year check: if your student received a change of clothes from the health room this year I’d love to receive those items back! Make sure clothing is washed and returned before end of year. Also, if you’d like to donate clean, gently used clothing (specifically pants and t-shirts) that would be fantastic!

Check out the Tolt School Nurse website to see everything you need to do to prepare for next school year and make sure your student is ready for the first day of school.
