President’s Note

I’m officially declaring this newsletter a positive-only document! We have so much to be proud of in TMTA on both our teacher AND student sides. So let’s get to it.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the MTNA Foundation to honor Fredrica Phillips and Courtney Crappell, NCTM. Their awards are fully funded and will be presented to them at the MTNA Conference next year in Minneapolis. Come join us as we honor these valuable members of our organization.

There is a fascinating article about our new TMTEF Trustee Chair, Sharla Van Cleave, NCTM. You’ll find several surprises there, and wonder how she has time to run a music school with all her other activities.

At the bottom, we have listed the names and teachers of our South Central Division Performance Competition winners and alternates. We congratulate all these performers and their teachers on their fantastic showing in this competition. We look forward to seeing them have great success at the national level competition in March. We are so proud of all of them.

Also, there is the announcement about Chung Hon (Michael) Cheng, a student of Ann Rivers Witherspoon, and the NATIONAL WINNER in the MTNA Young Artist Composition Contest. What a fantastic honor this is for him, and Ann. (plus a very nice monetary award!) Congratulations to them both. I’m also including a link to his winning piece, so you can hear what a talented young person Michael is.

Lastly, you can see the details for the student events that we will be having online because of our not holding an in-person convention this summer. Hope your students will enjoy these events but still get some taste of the experience they enjoy so much at our annual conventions. Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate through these hard times.

Be Safe, Be Healthy, and Be In Tune with TMTA.

Dr. Roy Wylie, NCTM
TMTA President

MTNA Young Artist National Composition Winner - Chung Hon Michael Cheng

Chung Hon Michael Cheng is the National Young Artist Winner of the 2021 MTNA Composition Competition. He was born in Hong Kong and began playing piano at age four and composing around age five. He later moved to Houston, where he studied composition with Dr. Ann Witherspoon and piano with Mr. John Weems and Prof. Nancy Weems.

Michael has been a frequent participant in the MTNA and TMTA competitions over the years. He was the National Junior Winner of the MTNA Composition Competition in 2012, and the Junior and Senior Runner-Up in 2011 and 2014 respectively, all proudly representing Texas. He also won the TMTA-SA Original Composition Contest several times between 2011 and 2016 and is incredibly grateful to Texas for giving him so much opportunity to grow and develop as a composer.

Michael graduated from Harvard College in 2019 with a B.A. in Physics (magna cum laude) and an M.S. in Engineering Sciences. At Harvard, he was Co-President of the Harvard Composers Association for three years as well as a three-time participant in the Harvard Choruses New Music Initiative. He is currently pursuing an M.S. in Technology and Policy at MIT and will start his J.D. at Harvard Law School in fall 2021.
