TN Chamber 2023 Legislative Session Recap


Last week, the Tennessee Chamber Government Affairs staff completed their annual update of the recent legislative session and were joined by House Assistant Majority Leader, Mark Cochran and Michael Hendrix who serves as Special Advisor to Governor Bill Lee to discuss the recently adjourned legislative session. Overall, the Chamber was successful on major items included in the Chamber's 2023 Legislative Agenda and congratulate both the House and Senate for their support and defeat of a number of items during the recent legislative session. Tennessee Chamber Business Leader Survey on Special Session and Public Safety: Please Complete by May 30


Governor Lee recently announced he will call for the Tennessee General Assembly to convene a special legislative session on August 21, 2023, to strengthen public safety and preserve constitutional rights. 


Please see the following short survey to help the Chamber determine our position on any proposed legislation in the special session. The survey takes three minutes to complete. In addition to the questions, we allow a comment section for each question to ensure your voice is heard.


Please note that the Chamber strives to get appropriate business feedback on important public policy issues. This survey is intended to gather opinions on this important policy topic from business leaders and does not represent an endorsement of any specific policy or position. Once completed the Chamber will review the results of the survey to help guide what our policy position and engagement will be as a business and manufacturing trade association.

Save the date for one of Tennessee’s most prominent Environmental Policy and Regulatory conferences, hosted by the Tennessee Chamber. This two-day conference connects environmental and industry leaders from across the state with representatives of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and Region IV of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to discuss emerging environmental regulatory and environmental management issues as well as to celebrate environmental and energy improvements in the state. 2023 Environment & Energy Awards

Submission Deadline: Friday, July 9th

The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2023 Environment and Energy Awards is a tremendous opportunity to recognize businesses & manufacturers that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in environmental protection and enhancement as well as proactive and innovative energy projects. 


Awards will be given to companies in these categories: Air Quality, Water Quality, and Solid & Hazardous Waste Management. An “Environmental Excellence Award” will be given to the nominee(s) who demonstrates the best overall efforts in environmental innovation or improvements. Only those industries that have combinations of air, water, solid waste and/or hazardous waste permits are eligible for this award. Additionally, an “Energy Excellence Award” will be given to an industry who has implemented significant energy innovation or improvements.

Governor Lee Launches

Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council

Executive Order Aims to Advance Nuclear Energy Innovation & Investment


Last week, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed an executive order to advance Tennessee’s position as a national leader in nuclear energy. Executive Order 101 creates the Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council, which will seek to build upon the state’s legacy in nuclear innovation and drive continued investment to create a nuclear energy ecosystem for the future of Tennessee. 


This year, Gov. Lee partnered with the Tennessee General Assembly to create a $50 million Nuclear Fund in the state’s Fiscal Year 2023-2024 budget. The fund, proposed by Gov. Lee at his 2023 State of the State address in February, will establish a nuclear development and manufacturing ecosystem built for the future of Tennessee by providing grants and assistance to support nuclear power-related businesses that choose to relocate or grow in the state.

Webinar on Methylene Chloride Proposed Risk Management Rule


ACC is hosting a webinar on the EPA’s Proposed Risk Management Rule for Methylene Chloride on Thursday, May 25 at 11:00 AM CT.


Background: On May 3, EPA published its proposed risk management rule for methylene chloride under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). While EPA was expected to ban consumer uses, in this rule, EPA is proposing sweeping bans on industrial and commercial uses, including uses as processing aids and many uses in manufacturing.

UPCOMING TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Forklift & Warehouse Safety (8:30am-4:00pm)

This full day class will cover the hazards and injuries likely to occur in warehousing and storage operations, including encounters with powered industrial trucks, material handling, lifting, hazard communication, walking and working surfaces, and life safety including fire protection and evacuation. This course is intended for warehouse workers, supervisors, and employers responsible for developing safe work practices and procedures in a warehouse setting.


Walking Working Surfaces (8:30-4:00pm)

This half day class will review 29 CFR 1910 Subparts D and I. Falls from heights and on the same level (a working surface) are among the leading causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. This rule on Walking-Working Surfaces and Personal Fall Protection Systems was developed to better protect workers in general industry from these hazards by updating and clarifying standards and adding training and inspection requirements.
