NEW YORK, NY -
TODAY Tuesday, December 19 at 10:00AM, NYC Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez, Rafael Espinal, and other elected officials will call for the replacement of retiring Chief Carlos Gomez to be a Latin@ and for more diversity in top leadership positions at the New York City Government.
The City of New York is 29% Latin@, but these numbers are not reflected in the many leadership positions in the public and private sector. Recently, NYPD Chief of Department, Carlos Gomez announced he is retiring; leaving a prominent seat open in the Department. With his departure we lose the only Latino in the top three positions of leadership at the NYPD. We have qualified officers in the Latino community that can fulfill this position. Out of the nearly 36,000 officers in the NYPD, 9,887, or 28% are Hispanic but 17,845
, or 50%, White males hold at least 70 percent of positions in the police force's highest ranks. This disparity is also reflected in other city agencies as well.
We are urging the New York City Government to be mindful of the importance of diversity as they promote qualified individuals from our communities. We know that an inclusive City is a stronger city.

NUEVA YORK, NY - HOY Martes, 19 de Diciembre a las 10:00AM, Los Concejales Ydanis Rodríguez, Rafael Espinal y otros funcionarios electos pedirán que el reemplazo del Jefe retirado de la Policia de Nueva York Carlos Gómez sea un latin@ y exigiran por una mayor diversidad en puestos de liderazgo en el Gobierno de la Ciudad de Nueva York.
La Ciudad de Nueva York tiene un 29% de Latin@s, pero estos números no se reflejan en las muchas posiciones de liderazgo en el sector público y privado. Recientemente, el Jefe de Departamento del de Policía de Nueva York, Carlos Gómez, anunció que se retirara; dejando un asiento prominente abierto en el Departamento. Con su partida, perdemos al único latino en los tres primeros puestos de liderazgo en el NYPD. Tenemos oficiales calificados en la comunidad latina que pueden hacer este trabajo.
