VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT
DGTDO RECRUITMENT CANVASSING 2021 LAUNCH.
Join DGTDO Chair, Greg Hosé, and fellow volunteers to recruit more Democrats to join our organization. We will be knocking the doors of those most likely to join our community of activism & civic engagement. We will need their help as volunteers to elect Democrats and support our community-engagement programs!

We have canvassing days of actions focused on precincts that do not have a Precinct Commiteeperson:

at
DGTDO OFICE
908 Curtiss St, Downers Grove

More days of action coming soon!

You can also pick up a walk list from 908 Curtiss during office hours. Office hours are:

Monday thru Thursday 1:30 to 6:00 pm
Friday 2:00 to 6:00 pm
Saturday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Current Precinct Commiteepersons can request a list and script for their precinct by emailing [email protected] or Sue Sitton at [email protected].

Hope to see you this weekend!
SHARE 5 NAMES. HELP BUILD OUR VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY.
We are asking for your help to find people in our community who may be interested in joining our DGTDO Team. One of the most effective ways to identify potential volunteers is for each of us to share contacts in our personal networks. We are asking you to share 5 people in your network. Scan the QR code below or go to this link to fill out the form. If there is something you want us to know about a person, please enter the information in comments.

As we get names of volunteers, our goal is to recruit and retain our volunteers. We will contact each person by email or text and then follow up with a phone call and/or scheduling a meeting at the office so we can get to know them. One of our goals will be to identify their interests and the work they might like to do. Here's a list of some of our volunteer opportunities:

  • Canvassing
  • Phone Banking
  • Fundraising
  • Election Day Help
  • Office Help
  • Register Voters
  • Communications/Social Media
  • Writing Postcards
  • Plan an Event

With their approval, we will add them to our email lists so they can be informed via e-blasts and our newsletter about what’s going on in DGTDO and our political community.

So yes. Here’s the ask. Please take a few moments to Share 5 Names in your network.

Thank you for your support of DGTDO!
We can’t do it without you!

SUPPORT DGTDO OFFICE AND HELP ELECT DEMOCRATS!
Please donate today to keep our office open and help us to continue our outreach to our voters. We will be meeting in person again and knocking on doors in this election cycle. In addition to social media and email, we will continue to outreach through the U.S. Mail. Also, we must continue to pay for our office rent, utilities and other expenses.

The DGTDO office is instrumental in supporting and electing Democrats to offices at all levels of government. We need to start planning for the 2022 election cycle. Because of redistricting, we will have more candidates in 2022 than in other election cycles. All US Representatives, State Senate, State Representatives, County Board, and Forrest Preserve Board positions will be up for election. We will be busy and your donation allows us to do the work to elect Democratic candidates.

If you are a monthly supporter, we appreciate your ongoing commitment to the organization. We also appreciate the annual checks that we have received from some of our special donors.

We hope that everyone will continue to donate to fund our work during this next vital election cycle. Don't forget, in recent elections, we elected a majority on the County Board and the Forest Preserve Commission, a judge to the Circuit Court, county wide offices, and to the State Legislature. It is our job to help get voters to the polls, and we welcome your support. Here are links to online donation opportunities:

PC CORNER
PC CORNER - SEPTEMBER 2021.
By Chris Hotchkin
Since the primary election has been moved to June in Illinois, we will not be passing candidate petitions until January. Precinct committeepersons can use these nice fall months to canvass their precinct to find out if anyone in our Democratic households needs to register to vote. We can also work on getting email addresses and mobile phone numbers for our Democratic voters, which will make it much easier to get information to our voters prior to the primary and general elections.

The Downers Grove Township Democratic Organization will hold a Volunteer Recruitment Canvass starting the weekend of September 18 and 19. Please participate in this canvass by going to the office on Saturday at 10:00 or Sunday at 1:00. You can ask to do your precinct or you can walk a precinct that currently does not have a PC. You will be given a list for your precinct and a script and handout to use.
DGTDO OFFICE RESOURCES AVAILABLE.

BUILDING BLOCKS - LOCAL GOVERNMENT
THE MAZE OF MUNICIPALITIES.
By Kim Savage
Most of us don’t give a second thought to local government issues, unless something happens that makes us angry. Whether it is approval of a new development, an ordinance to “better” our community, or increases to our property tax bills, municipalities and other units of local government impact our daily lives far more than state and federal governments.

It is easy to become confused with the complex maze of bureaucracies that regulates our lives within Downers Grove Township. Each municipality contracts with utilities for electric, gas, cable, garbage, and water service. Rates can vary from community to community, depending on the programs offered. The more complicated services include fire, police, sanitary, parks, and library districts. Thankfully, the 911 Emergency Dispatch will contact the correct fire or police department to respond to emergencies, as some localities are housed in two fire protection districts and some intersections may be served by up to three police departments. Libraries and parks may be managed by a municipality or be organized as a separate entity.

All of these bodies have one thing in common. They are operated by our neighbors, who have been elected or appointed to positions. In addition to the elected offices, each city or village has committees, boards, and commissions comprised by volunteer residents who carry out the work that sustains it. These units recommend building codes, housing densities, licensing regulations, and much more. While the positions are technically non-partisan, it is no secret that the Republican Party has established it as its own private club to create a launching pad to higher office. In many cases, despite the requirements of the Open Meetings Act, contracts have been steered to members of the club, keeping the business all in the family. This applies to the Downers Grove Township Government as well as other local bodies.

It is important that each of us take more responsibility to become aware of the doings within our communities. You can start by attending meetings or watching them online. You can also visit the website of your city, village, or DuPage County and investigate the volunteer opportunities for serving on a board or committee.

Don’t assume that your neighbors are working in the best interest of the community. In these times of polarized partisan politics, the far right is taking advantage of every opportunity to elect their zealots locally. Do you want to be proud of your community or regulated by the Proud Boys of your community? Tune in to local government today!
SUPPORTING SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS.
ANOTHER FANTASTIC AND SUCCESSFUL
DWDC EVENT!
CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING PANEL DISCUSSION.
By Chris Hotchkin
The Democratic Women of DuPage County recently presented a panel discussion on Culturally Responsive Teaching and the false issues regarding Critical Race Theory being complained about by right wing activists at school board meetings across the country. The impressive and knowledgeable panel included Stacy Davis Gates, Vice President of the Chicago Teachers Union; Rebecca Gamboa, fifth grade teacher and board member of the National Education Association; Karina Villa, Illinois State Senator and former school social worker; Dr. Robert Bruno, President of the Glen Ellyn School board and professor of labor relations at the University of Illinois, and Drushy Musham, 2020 graduate of Metea High School and student in the business school at University of Indiana. Each of these panelists presented valuable information that we can use as we try to combat the falsehoods being presented at school board meetings.

This panel presentation was virtual and was recorded by DWDC. If you would like to view the presentation, please send an email to [email protected] and we will forward the link and password to you.
GET INVOLVED.
DGTDO OFFICE IS OPEN.
Now that the office is open, we have coffee and chat on Saturday mornings - in person. Typically people show up around 10 am, but the office is open from 9 am to 12 noon. Stop by for good conversation with like-minded democrats. It helps to keep our sanity and to get caught up on what's going on is our community. You might also find a great volunteer opportunity.
POSTCARDS TO SWING STATES AVAILABLE AT DGTDO.
Are you interested in writing postcards to swing states? Stop by DGTDO office and pick them up. We currently have postcards for Georgia, thanking voters for voting in the 2020 election. These postcards can be mailed as you write them. Thanks for your help.
2022 ELECTION
RACES ON THE 2022 BALLOT.
FYI. On Tuesday, Dan Cronin announced that he will complete his term of office as DuPage County Chair; however, will not be running for Chair in 2022.

Due to the delay in finalizing redistricting, the 2022 Primary Election will be in June. Here are key dates:

Petition signatures: 1/13 to 3/14
Petition filing: 3/7 to 3/14
Primary Election: 6/28

For a current list of races that will be on the 2022 Ballot for DG Township (based on current districts), go to our website dgdemocrats.org.

Districts for state house and senate are done. DuPage County and Congressional districts are expected to be available in October. Stay tuned for updates.
