Our Whole History Matters – The Lemmon Slave Case
"History is recounted where it was made"
Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins speaking with JHC Board member Olney Reynolds
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this compelling program “The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case and the Contribution of John Jay II, a Conversation with Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, Author of The Eight” moderated by Hon. Phil Solages and joined by special guest Luanne Wills-Merrill, a descendant of two of the eight formerly enslaved. The case became a battle cry for secession when appeals defied the US Supreme Court’s ruling in Dred Scott v. Sandford. The discussion centered on the law but then expanded into how Judge Rosenblatt’s genealogy research led him to meeting descendants from the ordeal.

Patch writer Jeff Edwards described the event this way "[a] Hudson Valley institution, that is well-known for taking us back in time in ways both visceral and scholarly, was the perfect venue for exploring a pivotal moment in a fight for freedom that would tear a new nation apart.” Read the full Patch article here.
