PREPARING FOR WORSHIP

Vicar Sharai's message

In the Gospel reading this week, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a King who is organizing a wedding banquet. The King’s friends ignore his invitation, so he extends the invitation to anyone else who actually wants to attend. But there are a few twists here that seem out of place in the Kingdom of Heaven. The friends who ignored the King’s invitation, killed the messenger of the King, so the King sent troops to burn down their entire city! Then, after inviting anyone who wanted to attend his party, the King has a man bound and thrown out into the dark streets just because he wore the wrong clothes! Could the Kingdom of Heaven really be like this King?

Jesus, you tell us stories to express the kind of world you want us to create. Help us to consider the ways you call us to change. Amen.

Let's live out our generosity!

WONDERING...

Real questions from real people to learn more about faith

What's with all the Parables?

Parables aren’t straightforward, and I don’t think they’re meant to be! Isn’t it strange that Jesus spoke to us in that way? Instead of a list of commands (which, by the way, we have already been given), Jesus used stories to give us glimpses of God’s Kingdom. Stories say so much more and cover so many more situations than a list of rules ever could! Since long before Jesus’ time humans have used story to communicate rules, fear, anger, hope, joy, love, and so much more! Jesus’ stories push us to talk to each other, and they make us work to see things from a perspective that’s different from our own. Parables help us to see our own choices and actions in new ways too. What a beautiful way for Jesus to show us his love: by connecting with us using our own language of story! —Vicar Sharai
