Mission

The St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Bureau was established by Buchanan County voters in the spring of 1993 with the purpose of "advertising and promoting tourism in Buchanan County, Missouri."  The CVB is governed by a board of seven members and is a political subdivision of the Buchanan County Commission. 

The St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau is an organization that will develop and implement marketing programs designed to maximize the economic impact of visitor dollars to Buchanan County.

In 2012, Buchanan County generated $158.6 million dollars in tourism related economic-impact according to the Missouri Department of Revenue, up $7 million from 2011.

Memorial Day kicks off the official start of Summer! Whatever your needs this summer, we've got you covered. So, in no particular order, here are the Top 10 things to do in St. Joseph this summer:

Museum Summer Fun:
 
Glore Psychiatric Museum 
With 13 museums you can definitely find something interesting to do during the dog days of summer.  Enjoy the Pony Express Museum, dedicated to the 1860 mail service, The Patee House Museum, a glorious hotel turned 19th century museum, and next door find Jesse James Home, where Jesse was shot by Robert Ford on April 3, 1882. View extraordinary art at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, visit the home of Joseph Robidoux, the towns founder, and learn about the history of mental health treatment is at the Glore Psychiatric Museum, one of three museums on the grounds of the St. Joseph Museum.  Most museums are offering special summer activities and events.

Kansas City Chiefs Summer Training Camp
Chiefs Training Camp 
Slated to begin the last week in July, the Kansas City Chiefs have called St. Joseph their summer home for the last 3 years. With the changes this past season, expect some changes at camp this year, including fully padded practices and more opportunities to get up close and personal with your favorite players.  Camp is located on the grounds of Missouri Western State University. Official dates will be released soon. www.facebook.com/KCChiefsinStJo will have regular, timely updates and info on 2013 camp.    

Local and Regional Driving Tours:
St. Joseph has organized 7 local and regional driving tours, from Civil War and Jesse James, to Public Accessible Art and Downtown Architecture.  You can even find a driving tour from St. Joseph, along Highway 36, the Way of American Genius, all downloadable from our website or for pick-up at our Visitors Centers.

Fort Smith:
Ft. Smith, named after Colonel Robert F. Smith, was erected in late September 1861 as a safeguard against conflicting armies battling on either side of the state line.  Today, Fort Smith Park includes 3 full-scale authentic reproduction cannons, restored redoubts, a lookout point, period flags, informative signage, and an ordinance shed displaying illustrations of various types of artillery shells used during the conflict.  The fort is a passive park, where visitors can come, relax, picnic and see a wonderful view of the city and beyond.  The Grand Opening is scheduled for Friday, June 28, and after that date will be open 9am - 5pm, 7 days a week, April 16th - October 14th.  Closed October 15-April 15th.

St. Joseph Aquatic Park and  Ramada Inn's Monkey Cove:
Aquatic Park
The St. Joseph Aquatic Park provides aquatic fun for all ages. It features a 203' water-slide, 165' enclosed water-slide, waterfall, vortex, zero-depth beach entry, and a 300' lazy river (river tubes available at no extra charge).  The facility is available for private party rental and daily admission as well. Open 11 am - 7 pm during the summer months.
Monkey Cove is located inside the St. Joseph Ramada Inn.
It features a giant water slide, ten person spa massage hot tub, lazy river and children's multilevel play structure. They also offer children FREE admission to the water park ON their birthday. Parent or guardian must provide proof of birth date. Open M-Thr 3:30pm - 9pm, Fri, 3:30pm - 10pm, Sat, 12pm - 10pm, and Sun, 12pm - 9pm.

St. Joseph Mustangs Game:
For the second year in a row your St. Joseph Mustangs are the MINK LeaugeChampions! If you have ever experienced the wackiness of minor league baseball then summers at historic Phil Welch are for you. With promotions from Saturday night fireworks to a wild mustang running the warning track after homeruns, the Mustangs are a family friendly winner that will delight. The old time feel of the 75-year old park, with it's wooden roof and brick walls, takes you back to the early days of the game.

Entertainment and Nightlife:

Live Music 
St. Joseph has a great assortment of very eclectic and exciting nightlife. The live music scene has really taken off over the last few years, and on almost any Wednesday-Saturday night, visitors to town can enjoy some of the greatest local and regional musical acts in Northwest Missouri. Other nightlife opportunities include Sounds of Summer, a Friday evening,6 week outdoor music series, Imagine 11, a Sunday evening outdoor concert series organized by 20 local churches, line dancing and DJ dance clubs, fantastic dining options at unique locations, and a plethora of Broadway caliber plays, musicals, symphony performances, and various other acts at our historic Missouri Theater.

Pony Express Farmers Market:
The Pony Express Farmers' Market is a grower-only farmers' market and is located in the East Hills Mall Parking Lot (behind Dillards & Sears) off Woodbine in St. Joseph, MO. The open air market is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 7am-1pm or sellout; and runs from mid-April through the end October.  New Spring arrivals, along with a list of regular items for sale is available on their website.

Summertime Festivals: 

What does barbecue, softball, African art, jazz, mariachi bands, historical re-enactments,
Trails West! Festival 
funnel cakes, pumpkins, sugarplums and twinkle lights have in common? Well, each year, St. Joseph plays host to 13 annual festivals that feature these very things and much, much more. 6 of them occur between June and September, making St. Joseph a very exciting place to visit.

Saint Joseph, Missouri is one of America's best-kept secrets for historicarchitecture. Founded in 1843, St. Joseph quickly grew to become one of the most important sites of commerce and trade for the western continent. Early on it was at the forefront of advances in transportation and communication.  Vast wealth generated by St. Joseph's manufacturing and wholesale trade is reflected in our city's extraordinary architecture. Today you can still see much of that architecture preserved in various historic neighborhoods and in our downtown area.
