UNDP organizes Crime Victimization Survey for Saint Lucia

Mr. Anthony Martial, Crime Security Liaison Officer from the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association attended the continuation of the 2019 Crime Victimization Survey (CVS) for Saint Lucia and a training course on Crime Victimization Surveys June 10th to June 14th 2019 at the Saint Lucia fisheries complex conference room.  
 
The course was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, through the CariSECURE Project and the Central Statistical Office in Saint Lucia. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Justice and National Security was also an integral partner in this project. The project aims to strengthen evidence-based decision making for citizen security by improving the quality and quantity of crime data collected while building the capacity of the individuals involved in the sector to analyze the data. A total of 29 people attended this workshop from 15 departments /institutions, including CSO, Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Department of Gender Relations, Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, Bordelaise Correctional Facility ,Attorney General Chambers, Department of Economic Development ,Department of Equity, Probation And parole Services, Prandial Larceny unit, Substance Abuse, SLASPA, United And strong, And Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association.

The Saint Lucia CVS is a critical component of CariSECURE. The primary objective is to accurately ascertain the magnitude of victimization within a country and more specifically, crime levels and trends, perceptions of public safety, the impact of crime on society and vulnerable groups and the level of public confidence in the criminal justice system and its actors.
Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School Retains SLHTA Chefs in Schools Cook Off Championship Title 2019

Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary retains the SLHTA Chefs in Schools Championship title for yet another year.

The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association Inc would like to congratulate the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School on winning the Chefs in Schools Cook Off 2019.

In 2nd place was the St Joseph’s Convent team made up of Janaii Williams and Kurres Joseph, trained by Chef Nissa Paul of Windjammer landing Villa Beach Resort. And in 3rd Place was Merkijay Jean and Wavimey Prosper of the Leon Hess Secondary School and trained by Chef Billy Mauricette of Cap Maison.

The two students competing for Soufriere Comprehensive were Sherquean Franky and Kayla Joseph, both form 4 students. The team put on a great show in both the Signature Dish and Basket Rounds at the recently held competition on their home grounds at the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th June 2019.

The Soufriere team were trained and coached by Chef Ruben Kumar of Anse Chastanet Resort over the past 2 months in preparation for the competition.

Kayla and Sherquean along with their Chef and teacher will travel to Barbados to represent Saint Lucia at the Regional Caribbean Junior Duelling Challenge come August this year. Their training will continue over the summer in preparation for the regional leg of the Culinary Competition.

The Competition was proudly sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund, Winfresh Limited, Diamonds International and TransCaribbean.

How Saint Lucia's 2019 Chocolate Chef, Steffie Marius went from Student Trainee to Miami.

A promising graduate of the Saint Joseph Convent Secondary School, her mother had it in the cards for her to build a future in business. However, when a 16-year-old Steffie Marius found herself assessing the options before her, little else sparked more joy than the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College’s “Food and Beverage” program. The two-year associate degree course offered professional training opportunities and when she enrolled, Marius was introduced to various hectic, quick-paced kitchens across Saint Lucia’s hotels and restaurants. Ultimately, however, when she finished college, it was the ‘Hot’ kitichen at Sandals that saw her build her foundation as a culinary professional.

“I started off in the Hot kitchen. I only worked nights and was mostly doing vegetables and prepping for main courses,” remembers the now 28-year-old as she reflected on her earlier years. Before long however, the hot kitchen began to dampen her enthusiasm. “One of the chefs saw that I was unhappy, and we had a one on one conversation,” Marius said.
