TOURISM MATTERS
With only 6 weeks to go, the much anticipated SLHTA Chefs in Schools Cook Off sponsored by Winfresh Limited will be one of the most exciting events of the Association. The competition will be held at the grounds of the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School on June 13th and 14th 2019 from 9am.

The each has been assigned to a hotel to receive training in preparation for the competition. A total of 10 schools are expected to participate this year.

Agro- Tourism Workshop organized by Ministry of Agriculture and Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture

CEO and TEF PM attended two-day workshop hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and IICA to provide input on a policy to stimulate agro-tourism linkages. The meeting also discussed regional best practices from a number of other Caribbean and Latin American territories. 

Local companies operating sites and attractions were on hand to share their experiences and challenges as well as to answer questions from participants. SLHTA was represented on a panel discussion in the person of Immediate Past President Sanovnik Destang who shared our experiences with the formation and operation of the Virtual Agricultural Clearing House. The SLHTA got a better appreciation for grant funding available to support culinary arts development, promoting our island’s best practices in agro tourism and develop working relationships with other destinations.

SLHTA Board continues efforts at SLHTA Institutional Strengthening

For the second consecutive week, SLHTA board members met with Consultant Agnes Francis to continue a Board commitment to strengthen the SLHTA to better meet the demands of our members. The assignment aims to have new Strategic Plans crafted for the institution as well as proposed amendments to our bye laws and organizational structure to ensure priority issues are managed effectively. The exercise will be conducted over a two month period, during which time various cross sections of our membership will be canvassed for feedback and input. Final documents will be presented at the SLHTA’s upcoming Annual General Meeting tentatively set for July 2019.
SLHTA Meets with Honourable Ezechiel Joseph

On Thursday 2 nd May the SLHTA attended a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-Operatives. The Association sought the opportunity to share updates with the Minister on its work on sustainable tourism development and to build stronger ties with the Ministry to create more sustainable livelihoods. The meeting discussed the creation of a working group to focus on collaborations to make communities more resilient to economic and environmental shocks, partnership to rejuvenate nature trails, bird watching trails and hiking trails managed by community groups, updates on collaboration between the SLHTA and Saint Lucia National Conservation Fund and the work of the Climate Change Initiative.
SLHTA attends Chamber of Commerce Insurance Symposium focused on Health, Wealth and Business Resilience

The Association attended a very informative meeting hosted by the St Lucia Chamber of Commerce to discuss the importance of insurance in productivity, competitiveness and profitability of workers and companies. A number of presentations were received from insurance companies and guest speaker Claudius Francis delivered an engaging presentation citing case studies for emphasis. The SLHTA has expressed to the Chamber, its interest in collaborating for the creation of a pension scheme for our members.
