On Tuesday December 17th, 2019  the Saint Lucia Hospitality & Tourism Association (SLHTA) will be hosting its Quarterly General Meeting  (QGM)  under the theme “ Creating Connections; Building Linkages”.   This theme was deemed best suited as   the Association has continued to focus on the importance of linkages within the Agriculture, Arts & Craft, Manufacturing and Small Business Enterprises Sectors. In addition, the SLHTA has prioritized the need for Allied Members to build alliances, develop relationships and acquire mutual benefits with the Accommodation Sector. A number of pending matters have been tabled for discussion. The AGENDA will be circulated shortly.

The Quarterly Annual General Meeting is scheduled to take place at the Harbor Club Resort from  1:30 pm – 5:30 pm  followed by a Business Mixer from  5:30pm – 7:00 pm . The Guest Speaker invited to present is  IICA ( InterAmerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture) Hemispheric Agro-tourism Specialist,  Ena Harvey  from the IICA Delegation in Barbados. Over the last four years, she has spearheaded IICA’s initiatives with the public and private sector in Agro-tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America, including the development of a Caribbean Strategy and Action Plan for trade linkages and rural tourism development.

Tourism Advisory Committee Meeting
The Ministry of Tourism convened its quarterly meeting of members of the Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC), to discuss matters impacting the tourism industry. At last week’s sitting, Committee Members representing over 17 different Ministries and Departments received presentations from various officials on the following subject matters:
  • Tourism Satellite Accounting update presented by Abigail Leo
  • Data Gaps in the Tourism Sector presented by Tercel Louis
  • Planned Tourism Investment Projects presented by Ann Margaret Adams
  • Agency priorities for next financial year presented by TAC Members

Council members passionately exchanged concerns on issues affecting implementation of projects, as well as factors hindering stronger linkages between tourism and other productive sectors. Notwithstanding the efforts of the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association to host trade shows and networking forums for members, many TAC members shared their concerns that the tourism incentives regime should be expanded to support the needs of manufacturers and service providers whose business models are heavily dependent on the hotel and tourism sector.

Representatives also lodged queries about the status of legislative and policy instruments designed to govern food safety and hygiene, energy efficiency, alternative energy projects and electric vehicles. Administrative challenges expected to impact the rollout of the Tourism Satellite Accounting project was discussed, as well as recommendations to mitigate the challenges. The Ministry of Tourism recommitted to working with stakeholders to implement solutions to the challenges raised.

Then members agreed to reconvene for updates in the first quarter of 2020.

During the 2019/2020 budget debate, the Minister for Sustainable Development Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert announced that Saint Lucia would be taking steps to reduce the country’s dependence on selected single-use plastics, as well as other food service containers made of Polystyrene (PS) and Expanded PS (EPS), also known as Styrofoam.

Following the policy announcement, the Department of Sustainable Development continued working with its key stakeholders. This was to ensure that adequate preparation was made to effect 1) the ban on the importation and 2) the subsequent ban on the use, sale, and manufacture of Styrofoam and selected plastic food service containers.

Manufacturing, agro-processing and art & craft sectors to benefit from SLHTA linkages program

The St. Lucia Hotel & Tourism Association (SLHTA), which recently won an award and accolades from the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) for its Virtual Agricultural Clearing House (VACH) program, is moving to expand the initiative in order to allow the manufacturing, agro-processing and and art and craft sectors to benefit from it.

The Virtual Agricultural Clearing House enables local farmers to sell their produce directly to hotels, restaurants and food and beverage distributors by connecting with them via a simple Whatsapp platform.

The phenomenal success of the VACH earned the SLHTA second place in the Social Responsibility category of the CHTA’s 2017 Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF) Awards. The CHIEF Awards highlight Caribbean businesses that work to improve the wellbeing of the industry and the region through the adoption of best practices.

With the VACH having had such a positive impact on the agricultural sector, the SLHTA is now looking to replicate its success by strengthen its partnership with the manufacturing, agro-processing and art and craft sectors and incorporating them into the linkages program.
