October 2019 News
The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) has designated October as "National Special Needs Law Month." Check out this article from Kiplinger discussing the issue of Special Needs Trusts failing here. For additional information on special needs planning, check out this article by our managing attorney, Helena S. Mock.

On Thursday, November 14 th , TPC and Riverside ChooseHome are offering a unique presentation where you will learn about the services that Life Care Planning and ChooseHome offer to ensure that you age with dignity and age where you want, with the care you want. This presentation is especially useful if you are concerned about relying on family members to make decisions and provide care on your behalf. By planning early, before you need care, you can maximize the benefits available to you through either – or both – of these programs. Come meet TPC’s attorneys and Elder Care Coordinator and ChooseHome’s Personal Services Coordinators and hear how they can help you on your aging journey. Look in your inbox later this month for more information about the event and how to sign up.
Because many of our clients ask general questions about estate planning subjects, and because these topics can be overwhelming and confusing, we are offering free information seminars to existing clients and the general public. We will cover a variety of topics, including estate planning, probate and trust administration, Life Care Planning, special needs trusts, and guardianships/conservatorships.

There is no cost or other obligation for attending, but we do ask that you call in advance for a reservation so that sufficient seating will be available. Please call 757-969-1900 to register. We look forward to seeing you soon!

It’s Never Too Early for Life Care Planning
Catherine E. Sears, Esq.

So often, I meet with clients who would be perfect candidates for TPC’s Life Care Planning program but just aren’t willing to accept it yet. For those who don’t know, Life Care Planning is a holistic approach to the concerns of aging that has the law firm at the center of your aging process. So often, families who are helping a loved one through the aging process make the same common mistakes. To read the entire blog, click here .

Napping and Alzheimer's
Last month's featured article focused on napping! Who doesn't like a good nap? It sure is a great thing to do on a rainy afternoon. An article was recently published about the changes in sleep-wake cycles and Alzheimer's Disease, and the connections made between the two are quite interesting. A research study recently noted a trend between the onset of Alzheimer's and an increase in taking naps during the day. Don't be alarmed, though: napping is a part of life, and just because you like to nap doesn't necessarily mean Alzheimer's is looming in the future. But, it's nice to be informed of research as it comes along. You can find the full USA Today article here.
