Texas DPS Updating Skills Test to Solve Pre-Trip Section Challenges

In response to a longstanding challenge faced by drivers, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is set to introduce a new and contemporary Commercial Driver License (CDL) skill testing initiative, marking a significant step in addressing the difficulties many drivers encounter during the pre-trip portion of the test.

Recently approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Commercial Driver License Skills Test Modernization initiative has gained the green light, with AAMVA initiating the process changes and training guides required for states to adopt this progressive testing approach.

According to Austin's KXAN news station, the changes include:

  • Modernized protocols for CMV pre-trip vehicle inspection and basic control skills testing
  • Checklist for a pre-trip vehicle inspection test as an aide to applicants
  • Updated CDL Driver’s Manual will be made available

The DPS has outlined its plan to commence the implementation of the initiative by Spring 2024, with an estimated completion date of September 1, 2024.
