Will Texans See Rolling Blackouts This Winter?

As we gear up for winter, it's important to be prepared for potential challenges in the power grid. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has cautioned about the possibility of rolling blackouts if extreme temperatures reoccur, reminiscent of the events in February 2021. This is a worst-case scenario, but a warning nonetheless.

During Winter Storm Uri, ERCOT implemented rolling blackouts due to surging demand for heating. At its peak, four million people endured 70.5 hours without power as severe weather knocked offline 365 generators.

If rolling blackouts are to occur this winter, ERCOT is looking to strategically plan outages to occur from 8 am to 9 am.

The 2021 storm marked Texas' coldest temperatures in over 30 years, leading to grid and water system failures. The strain on the grid is attributed to the state's growing population, increasing energy usage, and extreme weather patterns.

Despite new protocols for power plants, concerns persist for the upcoming winter. Some experts anticipate historic levels of the El Niño weather pattern, potentially leading to increased snowfall in Texas and across the United States.

As propane delivery companies, we thought we would forewarn you so you can be prepared for these blackouts that can disrupt phone lines, utility services and power to your propane business so you can prepare to provide uninterrupted service for our customers during potential grid challenges.

Is Your Listing Up to Date? Texas Propane Retailer Directory

Are you taking advantage of our "Find a Propane Retailer in Texas" tool? It's a complimentary perk for our members.

Ensure your locations and serviced counties are included in the TPGA Member Only "Find a Propane Retailer in Texas" tool.

Simply click here to access it and search by county to check to see if you are already listed or need to correct or update your information. If you've acquired or opened a new location, don't forget to add it.

Most of the information TPGA has on our members is their mailing address for their main office, but not exactly something we can use to help locate you especially for those of you with P.O. boxes. So, it is important that you complete our directory form with your “physical address” so consumers can find you and most importantly for directory to work, we need the counties you service.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to have your company listed.

You need to complete a separate form for each manned location you have that is not already in the directory.

Anti-Fossil Fuel Curriculum Blocked from Texas Schools

Commissioner Wayne Christian reports on a significant victory in preserving the integrity of Texas education by thwarting attempts to introduce anti-oil and gas content into the curriculum for Texas students. This success follows the approval of new educational materials by the Texas State Board of Education, raising concerns about the potential promotion of a radical environmentalist agenda.

In response, Commissioner Christian penned a compelling letter, emphasizing the importance of providing students with a balanced and factual understanding of energy sources. He stressed the need for education on fossil fuels and real-world energy, stating, "Students should learn about fossil fuels and real-world energy—where it originates, how it operates, and how it contributes...the world."

Highlighting the pivotal role played by fossil fuels, Commissioner Christian noted that these fuels power 80% of global energy, manufacture 96% of consumer goods, contribute significantly to economies, and sustain billions of people worldwide.

Commending the Texas State Board of Education for rejecting radical environmentalist propaganda, Commissioner Christian applauded the board's commitment to ensuring that Texas students receive an education that underscores the numerous benefits of fossil fuels.
