In brief

July 8, 2024

Welcome to the latest edition of the Monday Morning Messenger.

I trust everyone had an excellent Fourth of July weekend.

In our first story of the morning, the Acting Governor has issued a disaster declaration that suspends the Hours of Service for several in the anticipated path of Hurricane Beryl.

In a very close second, the Texas Propane Gas Association wants to alert members of another coordinated roadside enforcement event happening this week.

Additionally, the association has several updates for members regarding our upcoming annual convention and expo. Firstly, one of the most important updates is that the hotel reservation deadline is this week.

Also, see which vendors and service providers are coming to the expo.

Lastly, to foster the next generation of propane professionals, NPGA has launched the Young Professionals Council (YPC). Read and share this opportunity with young propane professionals at your company.

Hurricane Beryl: Texas Hours Waiver

Over the weekend, Dan Patrick, Acting Governor of the State of Texas, issued disaster proclamation(s) certifying that Hurricane Beryl poses a threat of imminent disaster, including widespread and severe property damage, injury, and loss of life due to possible widespread flooding, life-threatening storm surge, damaging wind, and heavy rainfall.

Pursuant to 49 CFR 390.23, an emergency declaration issued by the Governor of a state automatically triggers the suspension of hours-of-service limitations outlined in 49 CFR 395.3 for 14 days for select counties in the path of the Hurricane. See the linked declaration below for a full list of counties.

The Acting Texas Governor's latest disaster declaration was issued on July 6, 2024, and hours-of-service limitations will be waived for 14 days thereafter while responding to these potentially affected counties.

ANECDOTES NEEDED! Please share how this waiver benefited your propane company before and during the storm. TPGA and NPGA will use these stories to secure future waivers. Email anecdotes to jmason@txpropane.com.

Heightened Enforcement: July 7-13, 2024

Operation Safe Driver Week

Mark your calendars! Operation Safe Driver Week is happening from July 7th to 13th, 2024. This annual initiative by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) focuses on improving road safety through education and enforcement of safe driving practices for both commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers.

  • Focus on Reckless Driving: Law enforcement will be on high alert for CMV drivers exhibiting reckless, careless, or dangerous behaviors behind the wheel. This includes speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, driving under the influence, and more.
  • Increased Enforcement Activity: Expect to see more traffic enforcement throughout the week. CMV drivers caught engaging in unsafe behaviors can be pulled over and issued a warning or citation.

Helping You Stay Safe on the Road

The CVSA offers a variety of resources to support CMV employers and CDL drivers in prioritizing safety:

  • Free Driver Training Materials: Equip your drivers with the knowledge they need to stay safe on the road—access free downloadable resources like educational materials and OnDemand Training.

Save the Date: NPGA Young Professionals Council (YPC) First In-Person Meeting to be Held in Texas

This year, the NPGA established the Young Professionals Council to develop new generations of propane industry leaders through educational sessions, leadership opportunities, networking, and easing overall industry engagement.

Council membership consists of industry workers 40 years old and under from various company positions. We are also establishing a diverse group of corporate members, including marketers, suppliers, vendors, and service companies.

Educational sessions, webinars, and meetings are primarily conducted online, with face-to-face opportunities at the Southeast Expo in April and selected board meetings.

Next Meeting

The Council has chosen Texas for its first in-person event and meeting, which will be held in conjunction with the NPGA Fall Board Meeting in San Antonio on October 7th and 8th.

If you want to learn more about joining the council or sponsoring its monthly online educational sessions, please contact Robert Kenney, membership chair, for more information.

Robert will also be at the Crossroads Expo and would love to meet with you to discuss participation in the Council. You can reach him at robert@metsa.com
