February 2024

Principal's Message

Greetings Taylor Prairie Families,

During the month of January, we reviewed how to be safe in school, and we also focused on kindness! Learners painted kindness rocks, participated in a kindness challenge and were invited to join many dress-up days! I hope your child had a great time participating in Kindness Month!

February is upon us and this is a great time for families to check in on your learner's progress. We recently posted report cards in Infinite Campus. Learn more about our elementary report card in this family letter. Also, conferences are coming up, giving families a chance to sit down with teachers to discuss celebrations and challenges observed so far this school year. Watch for a sign-up from your child's teacher in the coming weeks.

Warmest Regards,

Emily Foster

TPS/MGSD Activities and Information

February Tech Tip #3

Choose short and simple TV shows, videos, or apps.

Videos and apps with lots of sounds, pop-up ads, or fast interactions will be too distracting for young children. Try simple activities like looking at the photos on your phone together or watching short nursery rhyme videos. You can use Common Sense Media to find high-quality content for children age 2 and up. Beware of products that advertise themselves as educational -- few really are.

Ask yourself: Is the TV show, video, or app fast-paced or loud? Does it have lots of distracting features?

February's Safety Drill

Lockdown Drill

Taylor Prairie will hold a lockdown drill on February 12th for all students and staff. Click the button below to read more on how we'll conduct the drill and more.

MG Superintendent Search Process Update

After more than 30 years in education and over two decades in school and district administration, Monona Grove School District Superintendent Dan Olson announced in December his plans to retire at the end of the current school year. MGSD is now engaged in a comprehensive search for the next superintendent.

In its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration, MGSD will engage all constituents of the district (students, families, staff, community members and other stakeholders) to share their valuable insights, perspectives, and expectations for the next educational leader.

An electronic survey will be available for any Monona Grove stakeholder to share their input and feedback. The survey will be emailed to staff and families in February and will be available on our website for all other stakeholders.

Focus groups will be held in February (both virtually and in-person); dates and times are listed on the Superintendent Search page of our website. More details will be available soon.

iReady image

iReady Diagnostic

Kindergarten learners will be participating in the final iReady Diagnostic during the weeks of February 1- February 22. The Diagnostic will occur in small portions, over 4 or more days, during the testing window. Once learners have completed the Diagnostic they will work on the iReady online instruction, which will be adjusted based on their Diagnostic results, for the remainder of the year.

The iReady Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Learners take the Diagnostic for both Math and Literacy. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade, but instead to determine how best to support your child’s learning.

After your child completes the iReady Diagnostic, they are assigned to different lessons in the iReady Online Instruction. These lessons incorporate kid-friendly videos and activities to introduce new concepts and reinforce what has been learned. In addition, once the Diagnostic is complete all families will receive a copy of the Family Report, which will give information on your child's performance and growth from the Fall.

There are many ways you can support your learner at home; including making sure they are well rested, providing access to a nutritious meal, talking positively about the Diagnostic and encouraging learners to try their best.

TPS K Transition to CGS 1st Grade

We will be sad to see our kindergarten friends leave TP in June, but we are very excited for them to move on to 1st grade at Cottage Grove School! In order to have a smooth transition in September, we have planned several activities this spring for our learners to become familiar with some of the staff at CGS, as well as the school building itself. The tentative plan includes some CGS teachers and office staff visiting Taylor Prairie kindergarteners, a field trip or two for our Kindergarten learners to go to CGS to see the classrooms, gym and cafeteria, and an opportunity to play on the playground. We are still getting things finalized, so watch for more details in the coming months!
