TAKE ACTION ON ATTENDANCE

Let's All Make Good Attendance a Priority this Year

#AcceptTheChallenge

The start of a new school year brings about the opportunity for us all to reset and create a plan to stay on track for success. It all starts with committing to show up for class, starting on day one.

Consistent and punctual attendance is a key factor in a student's academic success. When students are present in school, they benefit from the full spectrum of educational opportunities, including direct instruction, class discussions, collaborative projects, and hands-on activities.

Here are a few key reasons why regular attendance is crucial:

  • Academic Achievement: Regular attendance helps students stay on track with their studies, ensuring they grasp new concepts and keep up with coursework. Missing school can lead to gaps in knowledge, making it harder for students to catch up and perform well in assessments.

  • Social and Emotional Development: School is not just about academics; it is also a place where students develop social skills and build friendships. Regular interaction with peers and teachers fosters a sense of community and belonging, which is essential for a child's overall well-being.

  • Building Responsibility: Attending school regularly instills a sense of responsibility and discipline in students. It teaches them the importance of commitment and helps them develop good habits that will serve them well throughout their lives.

  • Preparation for the Future: Consistent attendance is a predictor of future success. Whether in higher education or the workforce, regular attendance is seen as a sign of reliability and dedication. Encouraging good attendance habits now sets the foundation for future accomplishments.

As parents and guardians, you play a vital role in ensuring your child attends school regularly.

Here are a few tips to help support your child's attendance:

  • Establish a Routine: Ensure your child has a consistent bedtime and morning routine to help them wake up on time and be prepared for the school day.

  • Communicate the Importance: Talk to your child about the importance of attending school and how it benefits them academically and socially.

  • Schedule Appointments Wisely: Whenever possible, schedule medical and other appointments outside of school hours to minimize disruptions to your child's learning.

  • Stay Informed: Keep in touch with your child's teachers and school staff to stay informed about their attendance and academic progress.

We understand that there may be times when your child is genuinely ill or has a valid reason for missing school. In such cases, please notify the school promptly and provide any necessary documentation. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential.

New Law Affecting our 3rd Grade Students

Beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year, a new Louisiana law will take effect requiring third-grade students who are significantly underperforming in reading to repeat the grade. This legislation aims to address literacy challenges by ensuring students have foundational reading skills before advancing to fourth grade.

TECHNOLOGY

Chromebook Care

TPSS has been able to implement a plan to help prolonge the life of our devices, while also taking a little bit of a load off of the students' (literally). Student devices for our children in grades PreK-8th are now housed in carts within the classroom. This eliminates the students from needing to carry the devices to and from school each day. Housing our Chromebooks in classroom carts helps to ensure that the devices are accounted for at the end of each day, and that they do not receive the wear and tear of being carried in book bags. Although our teachers are working miracles to develop a usage plan for the classroom and helping to oversee the care of the devices, we could still use your help from home.

Please discuss with your child the importance of respecting school property, encouraging them to take pride in caring for their loaned devices.

  • Be Responsible: Handle your classroom Chromebook with care. Hold it close to your chest with 2 hands while walking to and from your desk. Sit and place the device on a flat surface while working.
  • Be Respectful: Practice good digital etiquette. Avoid cyberbullying, harassment, or any behavior that could be disruptive or harmful to others.
  • Follow Instructions: Listen to the directions of your teacher. There are procedures for taking the devices out of the cart, using the device, and returning it safely after your lesson.
  • Protect Your Privacy: Students receive unique usernames and passwords to log in to the devices and access programs used for learning. It is important not to share this login information with anyone.
  • Report Issues: If a device is not functioning properly or if you encounter any technical problems, report these issues to the teacher promptly. Do not attempt to fix technical problems on your own unless instructed.

Ask your child if they have used their classroom Chromebook yet this year for learning. Have them explain the procedures that have been put in place by the teacher. Make sure that they know that it is important to you that they take good care of their device while at school. We appreciate your partnership!

Acceptable Use Policy

Part of the back-to-school paperwork is reading, understanding, and signing our district AUP. An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is like a set of rules that helps everyone understand how to use technology in a responsible and safe way.

We encourage our families to read the AUP together, making sure that everyone understands the expectations which are set in place.

By following the AUP, you can make sure you’re using technology in ways that help you learn and get the most out of your schoolwork.

Read Our AUP

Protect Your Login

An important guideline of the AUP to follow is to protect your login information. The username and password assigned to our students allows them to access our devices, as well as important programs such as gmail, Oncourse, our Student Progress Center, and academic programs. If this login information is shared or stolen, others can access your child's important information. This could lead to issues down the road.

Stay Alert

Phishing emails (pronounced "fishing") look like they come from someone you might know or a trusted place, like your school or a popular website. These emails often ask you to click on a link or provide personal information, like your password or address. They might pretend they need this info for something important, but really, they’re trying to steal it from you.

If you get an email that seems suspicious, don’t click on any links or share any information. Instead, ask for help to make sure you’re not falling for a trick.

Smart Devices on Campus

Overall our students are doing a fantastic job honoring the new LA state law that has been set into place for this school year. It has been an adjustment for everyone and we are proud of the efforts that have been made to follow the rules.

Devices need to be powered off and tucked away in student bookbags. They cannot be carried in pockets, or held in their hands during the instructional school day. Consequences will be enforced for violations to the law, so please continue to be mindful when bringing smart devices on campus.

SHOP LOCAL

Why “Shop Local” Is a Win-Win for Tangipahoa Parish

Homecoming will be here before you know it! Shopping local for the perfect suit, dress, shoes, and accessories will help to support the growth of our schools. This includes choosing to dine in our downtown restaurants, purchasing flowers from local florists, and getting your glow up on in our salons. In Tangipahoa Parish, a portion of every dollar spent at any local business contributes additional funding for our public schools and helps to secure competitive salaries and raises for TPSS educators. By supporting local businesses, you’re directly investing in the education of our children and the livelihood of our teachers.

Keeping it local is a win for everyone in our community!
