There is Much to Celebrate in May

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, there’s a lot to celebrate! From saying a big thank you to our amazing teachers and shouting out our awesome principals, to enjoying all the fun end-of-year events—this is such a special time in our school community.

We’re so proud of everything our students, staff, and families have accomplished together. Thanks for being a part of it all—we couldn’t do it without you!

Let’s keep showing up, supporting one another, and enjoying these last few weeks of the school year!

Be Respectful. Be Compassionate. Be Great.

We want to give a HUGE shout-out to the incredible teachers who make our school a great place to learn and grow!

Your hard work, patience, and passion light up our classrooms and shape the future every single day. We are so thankful for everything that you do.

School Principal Day

On May 1st, we recognize and celebrate the incredible principals who lead our schools with dedication, compassion, and vision. Our principals do so much behind the scenes—from supporting students and staff to creating positive school environments where learning and growth thrive.

Please join us in thanking our school leaders for the countless ways they guide and inspire our school communities every day. Happy National School Principal Day!

School Lunch Hero Day

May 2nd is School Lunch Hero Day, a time to recognize the amazing cafeteria staff who make sure our students are well-fed and cared for every school day. From early mornings to lunchtime smiles, they help keep our schools running and our students ready to learn.

We are so grateful for their hard work and dedication. If your child would like to show their appreciation, a kind note or cheerful “thank you” can make their day!

TESTING & SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS

Give It Your Best

Tangischools will continue testing, assessing, and assigning work until the last day. LEAP, DIBELS, and End-of-Course assessments help measure student progress and help to ensure that each child is on track for success.

Testing will take place on designated dates, so please check with your child’s school for specific schedules. To help your child do their best, ensure they get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive on time each day.

Thank you for your support in making this a smooth and successful end of the school year! If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school.

LITERACY

New Law Affecting our 3rd Grade Students

Beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year, a new Louisiana law took effect requiring third-grade students who are significantly underperforming in reading to repeat the grade. This legislation aims to address literacy challenges by ensuring students have foundational reading skills before advancing to fourth grade.

3rd Grade Literacy Proficiency

If you have a child in grades kindergarten - 3, be on the lookout for a report on your child's DIBLES Assessment scores for the end of the school year to be sent home. The DIBELS assessment measures the reading fluency of each student individually, which helps parents and educators identify where the child needs help the most. By detecting the risks and monitoring development, we can work together with the child to ensure that he or she receives proper interventions to increase reading proficiency. If you do not receive this report, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Third grade students who are reading "well below level" as tested by the end-of-the-year DIBELS assessment in April will face retainment and must repeat third grade the following school year if unable to increase their DIBELS scores by June.

Reach out to your child's teacher for help and support.

Watch our latest Coffee Talk for more information.

WATCH NOW

DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It's a set of assessments used to measure a student's progress in essential literacy skills, like phonemic awareness and phonics, and is used in schools to track student learning and provide interventions when needed.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS

Changes to the Grading Scale

You may have noticed that Louisiana has adopted a unified grading scale, as a way to show consistency across all districts. The passing of House Bill No. 424 provides for a uniform ten-point grading scale relative to grades assigned in all Louisiana public schools.

Social Emotional Learning

Creativity Supports Social-Emotional Growth

At school and at home, creativity isn’t just about making art—it’s a powerful way for students to express emotions, build confidence, and strengthen important life skills.

Whether it’s through drawing, music, storytelling, building, or imaginative play, creative activities help children explore their feelings, solve problems, and connect with others.

In fact, creative expression is a key part of social-emotional learning (SEL). When students are given space to be creative, they learn to manage emotions, show empathy, and communicate more effectively. It also boosts resilience and gives them healthy outlets for stress or anxiety.

As a family, you can support this growth by encouraging open-ended play, journaling, family art projects, or even just asking your child to “create something new” from everyday items. These simple moments build confidence and emotional awareness while also being fun and meaningful ways to spend time together.

Family Activity

"Feelings Collage"

What You’ll Need:

  • Old magazines, newspapers, or printed pictures
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Large sheet of paper or poster board
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Directions:

  1. As a family, talk about different emotions you experience (happy, excited, worried, proud, nervous, etc.).
  2. Search through magazines or newspapers and cut out images, words, or colors that represent different feelings.
  3. Work together to create a collage by gluing the pictures and words onto the paper.
  4. Use markers or crayons to add your own drawings or words around the images.
  5. Once finished, take turns sharing what parts of the collage mean to you and why you chose them.

Why This Matters:

  • This activity gives children (and adults!) a fun, hands-on way to recognize and express emotions. It also opens up conversations about how to handle feelings in healthy ways, strengthening both creativity and social-emotional skills.

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” — Albert Einstein

Thinking and feeling go hand-in-hand in creative learning.

The Truth About Vaping

Families want what’s best for their kids, and that includes helping them make healthy choices. Vaping has become more common among teens, and with so much information out there, it can be tough to know what’s true. While some believe vaping is harmless, the reality is that it can have serious effects on young people’s health.

There are resources out there to help.
