CHILD NUTRITION

Choose to Eat Lunch

Our TPSS cafeterias are serving up a sandwich line on Tuesday and Thursdays to our 5th - 12th grade students. Encourage your child to make sure that they are eating lunch each day at school. Well-fed students pay better attention in class, participate more enthusiastically, and learn more readily. Having our extra sandwich line gives our students more options at meal time.

Children's Grief Awareness Day is designed to help us all become more aware of the needs of grieving children — and of the benefits they obtain through the support of others. Children's Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need. Visit us online for resources that you and your family could use to help navigate your way through difficult times.

EFFECTS OF GRIEF

Grief is a natural and normal reaction to loss and change. It affects ALL aspects of ourselves: the physical, emotional, psychological, behavioral, and spiritual.

Physical Effects

headaches • dizziness • exhaustion • muscular aches • loss of appetite • insomnia • hollowness • breathlessness

Emotional Effects

anger • sadness • anxiety • sense of helplessness • shock • numbness • yearning • relief • guilt

Psychological Effects

sense of depersonalization • lack of concentration • search for the meaning of life or death • dreams of the deceased • preoccupation with thoughts of the deceased

Behavioral Effects

crying • change of relationships • avoiding reminders • carrying reminders • withdrawal • over-activity • moodiness • apathy

Spiritual Effects

embracing one's faith • questioning one's faith • reliance upon God • anger toward God • coming to grips with one's own mortality • searching for the meaning of life

Because grief is such a unique reaction, the intensity, pattern, time frames and resolution will vary for every individual.

BUILDING LITERACY

MAKE A POSITIVE, LASTING IMPACT IN YOUR COMMUNITY.

Tangipahoa Parish School System is calling on all Tangi businesses to join our mission of having every child in our parish read on level by the third grade. Currently, only 46.1% of the students in our parish are considered on-level for literacy. Each day, TPSS strives to increase that number.

As a Partner in Literacy, you have the opportunity to provide resources, support, and encouragement to the students in our parish, making a difference in their lives.

If you are a business owner in Tangipahoa Parish and are interested in becoming a Partner in Literacy, fill out the form below and a team member will contact you soon.

Recipe for Reading

Why not cook up something yummy to eat AND spend meaningful time with the little people in your home this Thanksgiving?

Find a favorite recipe. Read through the list of ingredients and gather the supplies together. Read aloud the steps to the recipe, using your finger to track the text. Help your child when reaching a difficult word. Finding fun ways to read, work, and play together will help to nourish your child in so many ways!

Family Use of Devices During the Break

Holidays away from work and school give us much needed downtime at home with our families. Spending time on our devices can be an opportunity to relax, connect, and create with our children.

Ways to Connect

1. Use devices and watch with your children whenever you can. That way, you can discuss and explain things as they happen and connect it to real life. Plus, it's great bonding time.

2. Encourage creativity and not just consumption. Get kids coding and creating, so that media experiences are empowering.

3. Help kids identify healthy behaviors. Talk about both physical and emotional feelings during screen and non-screen activities. Discuss what is a reasonable amount of time to play on devices, and brainstorm a list of "unplugged" activities to do when the devices are put away. Reading, drawing, taking a pet for a walk, going on a nature hunt, riding a bike, or playing basketball are all great ways to exercise the brain and body.

Ask:

"Why is it important to stop what you're doing and pause for people, even if you don't want to?"

"How do you feel when your time watching TV or using your tablet is over and you have to turn it off?"

"What do you think healthy media balance could look like for our family?"

"What are the different kinds of activities, both online and offline, that you would want to do on a given day?"

Screen Time Tips for Adults

Ask yourself: Am I distracted by my phone or the TV when playing with my kids? What are some “tech-free times” I can set for myself and for the family? Think about your own habits. Modeling expected behavior can go a long way.

  • Try to keep the TV off if no one is watching it.

  • Silence your phone to reduce distractions during family time.

  • Model self-control when it comes to your devices.

  • Put devices away while at the dinner table or when helping with homework.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

Thank you, Veterans.

Schools across the district found beautiful ways to celebrate those who have dedicated so much to protect our country. We appreciate our veterans and the sacrifices they have made to help ensure our children and families are safe. Also, thank you to those who continue to serve and protect our rights and freedoms today. We are grateful for you!

Families celebrated the importance of our military by attending special programs at school.
