School Attendance Matters. If you do miss, send in an excuse!
If your child is going to be absent from school, it is vital to send in a parent note or a formal excuse from the doctor's office. This simple step ensures their absence is officially excused, preventing them from being marked as truant. An excused absence protects your student's attendance record and academic standing, and it helps our school comply with state regulations.
-
Parents may submit up to 3 parent-written excuses per semester to be considered excused absences. Handwrite a note to send with your child, or email the teacher.
-
A doctor's note is considered as an excused absence, but must be submitted within seven (7) days following the visit to the doctor.
A student with 5 UNEXCUSED absences is considered truant and is placed on the school's Truancy list. This means the student did not submit a parent note or a doctor's note for the absences. Once a student is on the Truancy list, they cannot be removed for the semester unless they submit their excuses.

Choose to Live a Healthy and Addiction Free Life
Hammond Westside Montessori hosted the Louisiana Attorney General's Office for a special anti-vaping presentation with our 6th-grade students.
This powerful program uses a face-to-face approach, bringing college athletes from Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) to our schools to encourage students to make good choices. Students loved rotating through stations and hearing directly from these champions about the importance of a healthy, vape-free life.
| | |
The Tangipahoa Parish School Board is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and productive learning environment for all students. The rise in the use of vaping devices and related products poses a serious health risk and creates disruptions to the educational setting. This policy is designed to deter the use, possession, and distribution of tobacco, vaping, and marijuana products, and to enforce strict disciplinary measures that promote student well-being, accountability, and compliance with Louisiana law.

A Message to the Class of 2026
To the Class of 2026, the final chapter of your high school journey is officially underway! This year will fly by, so we encourage you to make the most of every moment. Embrace the challenges and the fun that senior year brings—from Friday night lights to the last school dance. Explore new subjects, reconnect with old friends, and create lasting memories. Remember to stay focused on your goals while also enjoying the ride. This is your time to shine and set the stage for your future.
Academic and Future Planning
-
Come to school! Your senior schedule may look different from past years. You may be taking fewer, more specialized classes. It's so important to not miss class time, especially if you are taking dual enrollment classes, or classes which offer certifications. Be present!
-
Keep your grades up. You want to make sure that you have all of your needed credits by graduation. Speak to your counselor and teachers to make sure you are on track to graduate. Also, colleges and trade schools can and do revoke acceptances if a student's grades drop significantly during senior year. Don't fall victim to "senioritis."
-
Finalize your post-graduation plans. By now, you should have an ideas of what you may want to do after high school. You may have a solid list of schools you're interested in. If so, research their application requirements, deadlines, and financial aid opportunities. If you are interested in going straight into a job or career, stay focused on your goals to ensure you are ready to make that transition into the workplace.
-
Get letters of recommendation. If needed, ask teachers and counselors for recommendation letters early in the school year, providing them with your resume and a list of your accomplishments to help them write a strong letter.
-
Submit applications and essays. The fall is the time to complete and send in your applications, including any essays or personal statements.
-
Focus on financial aid and scholarships. File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as it opens. Continuously look for and apply for scholarships throughout the year.
-
Take or retake standardized tests. If you're not happy with your SAT or ACT scores, register to retake them early in the school year. This is the last week to register for the October ACT.
Next ACT Test Date: October 18 | Late Deadline: September 30
Study smarter!
October is one of only three test dates to get your ACT Answer Key!
| | |
Big news for the Class of 2026! The 2026-27 FAFSA® form is now live!
Apply now at FAFSA.gov to access grants, loans, and work-study that can help you pay for college or career training. The earlier you apply, the more opportunities you may unlock. Don’t wait — apply today! Reach out to your school counselor with questions on how to get started, or visit the online for lots of GREAT information.
FYI - Completing the FAFSA is a necessary step in the process of receiving TOPS scholarship money.

Gun Safety Program for K-4th Grade Students - Coming to a School Near You!
We would like to inform you about a gun safety program that will be implemented in grades K-4, starting in September. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® program is a gun accident prevention program that, for over 30 years, has helped keep kids safe. The program was developed by a task force comprising educators, school administrators, curriculum specialists, urban housing safety officials, clinical psychologists, law enforcement officials, and National Rifle Association firearm safety experts. It began in 1988 with one mission: teach children four simple, easy-to-remember steps so they know what to do if they ever come across a gun. Eddie and his friends are focused on telling children that if they see a gun, they need to Stop! Don't touch. Run away. Tell a grown-up.
Tangipahoa Parish School System is committed to keeping our students safe, and this gun safety program is one way we can proactively protect students. The program will be delivered by Lt. Don Alexander of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. The program includes this video and a discussion of gun safety procedures. If you would like more information on the program, please visit the Eddie Eagle and the Wing Team website. There are additional resources for families to continue gun safety education with children.
If you know something, say something.
