Have you heard about our new Magnet Center opportunity?

The purpose of the Advanced College and Career Magnet Center is to expand pathways for over 2000 11th - 12th grade students across our seven high schools in TPSS. By allowing teachers to be centrally located within The Center, TPSS juniors and seniors will have increased access to Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses, as well as opportunities to attain basic and advanced credentials. This innovation will support students’ college and career readiness, so they are able to access meaningful post-secondary opportunities.

The new center will open at the start of the 2023 school year.

STEM EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT

STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematical concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st-century skills.

Let's Talk About the Weather

Encourage your child to keep a weather journal over the summer break. Track if the weather is sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, or foggy. Find an outside thermometer, or use a weather app, to record the daily temperature.

Tracking daily weather helps children to apply the concepts of noticing patterns and trends, reading graphs, and basic mathematical computations.

Questions to ask:

  • How many more degrees hotter is it today than yesterday?
  • How is our weather at home different from the weather when we visited the mountains?
  • How can we protect ourselves from the weather? (example: a porch provides shade)
  • What do we do when there is severe weather? (Our baseball game was canceled to stay safe during the thunderstorm.)

Books:

Local libraries are a great resource for fiction and nonfiction books related to weather:

▪ Ten Ways to Hear Snow by Cathy Camper

▪ When Rain Falls by Melissa Stewart

▪ Monsoon Afternoon by Kashmira Sheth
