Building a Bright and Promising Future!

October is Crime Prevention Month, and in TPSS, the safety of our students is a top priority. We are using our precious time in the classroom to help teach our children ways to express if they feel unsafe, report suspicious activity, or reach out for the well being of a friend. October is also the time we bring awareness to making healthy choices for our minds and bodies. Over the month, we have discussed the importance of eating healthy during School Lunch Week, the critical needs of practicing School Bus Safety, and the benefits gained of being a friend by Uniting Against Bullying. This week, we celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

Families - Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children. We are One Team with One Purpose: seeing our youth through to a successful, fulfilling life beyond their childhood years. We would also like to express our gratitude to our community service workers for your continued partnership in the education of our students! Thank you for your time, dedication, and sincere interest in the health, well-being, and safety of the children of our community. #OneTeamOnePurpose

RED RIBBON WEEK

Students at Woodland Park Magnet School dress in red as a way to pledge to make good choices and lead a drug-free life as they grow older.

It's Red Ribbon Week!

Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23 through 31st.

Take the time to have conversations with your children about the importance of making healthy decisions which will impact their lives, and the lives of those around them. Saying "No" to drugs and alcohol will help to ensure that our children are able to stay focused on creating a successful, happy, and healthy future for themselves and those they love.

How can adults help to bring awareness and support the cause?

  • Talk to your children about the dangers of drug use and abuse and set clear rules about not using drugs.
  • Work together with the parents of your children's friends to set common boundaries and monitor behavior, so that rules are respected and reinforced.
  • Set good examples for your children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.

Our children have the right to grow up drug free, and we have the responsibility to make that happen.

Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free.

CHILD NUTRITION

National School Lunch Week was a Success!

TPSS staff and students enjoyed celebrating the benefits of eating a healthy school lunch with a fun week of activities. Eating a meal that is packed with nutrition will give your body the energy it needs to perform at its best, both physically and mentally.

The US Department of Agriculture has created an interactive site which helps to teach children how to create a balanced meal. Use time at the dinner table to pull up the site on a device. Discuss your meal together as a family. Which food groups are represented in your meal? Are they ways to adjust the meal, so that it better provides nutrition to your body?

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

TPSS Unites to Stand Up for Kindness

Our district celebrates being a respectful, compassionate, and great friend, not just on Unity Day, but each and every day. Our "Character Strong" curriculum helps to provide instruction on ways that students can become self-aware of their actions, so that they can begin to create an inclusive environment for all. Ask them to tell you some ways they have learned to show kindness towards others.

In a world where you can choose to be anything, choose to be kind.

Advocacy = Helping others get what they need.

Self Advocacy = Communicating and taking action to get what you need.

EMPOWERING YOUTH

Every child and teen can and should develop advocacy skills to address and prevent bullying.

Advocacy for yourself and others helps youth:

  • Feel empowered to help prevent bullying they see or experience
  • Identify what help is needed to address bullying
  • Ask others to get involved
  • Respectfully express disagreement
  • Offer their opinions with confidence
  • Make a positive difference for themselves and others

BUILDING LITERACY

MAKE A POSITIVE, LASTING IMPACT IN YOUR COMMUNITY.

Tangipahoa Parish School System is calling on all Tangi businesses to join our mission of having every child in our parish read on level by the third grade. Currently, only 46.1% of the students in our parish are considered on-level for literacy. Each day, TPSS strives to increase that number.

As a Partner in Literacy, you have the opportunity to provide resources, support, and encouragement to the students in our parish, making a difference in their lives.

If you are a business owner in Tangipahoa Parish and are interested in becoming a Partner in Literacy, fill out the form below and a team member will contact you soon.

First Lady Donna Edwards will be our first guest reader. She will read "Stellaluna," a 1993 children's book by Janell Cannon about a young fruit bat, Stellaluna who becomes separated from her mother and finds her way to a news of birds. She is adopted by them and learns bird-like behavior. Themes in Stellaluna include friendship and overlooking differences to find common ground.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Self-Awareness in Digital Life

Talk About How Your Child Feels When Using Technology

Your child is learning to pay attention to their feelings while using devices, such as tablets, phones, or computers. Use these questions to talk with them about the different ways technology makes them feel and what to do if they feel uncomfortable or frustrated.

For Lower Elementary students, ask these questions:

1. Let's talk about the kinds of feelings you might have when using technology. Do you ever feel sad or mad when you use your devices?

2. What are some things you do that make you happy when using technology?

3. Can you use the Pause, Think, and Ask routine?

    ■ Pause: When you have a feeling, stop and take a moment to notice it.

    ■ Think: Notice your feelings and think about what to do next.

    ■ Ask: Listen to your feelings. If you're feeling uncomfortable or frustrated, get help from a grown-up.

For Upper Elementary students, ask these questions:

1. There are Rings of Responsibility when using devices. Can you list any of them?

    ■ Self: Responsibilities you have to yourself, such as keeping yourself safe and healthy.

    ■ Community: Responsibilities you have to your community. This includes the people you know well, like friends and family, and people you might not know as well, like a clerk in a grocery store.

    ■ World: Responsibilities to the larger world, including people you don't know but who might be affected by your actions.

2. What are some things we value in our family? Are there any similarities to the Rings of Responsibility?

3. How could you use the Rings of Responsibility to help you think through the choices you make when you're online?
