Falling into a GREAT year.

This month we have officially transitioned from the start of the school year into our 2nd 9 weeks grading period. Our students are settled into their classes, making great progress toward their goals, and have their sights set on finishing this first semester strong!

It's been a super busy month for us in our classrooms. October is always full of activities, events, and awareness campaigns. We appreciate our family involvement and couldn't do it without you!

RED RIBBON WEEK

Take the Pledge

Take the National Red Ribbon Campaign Pledge!

Red Ribbon Week is October 23 - 31, 2024.

  1. As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children about the dangers of drug abuse.
  2. We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.
  3. We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.
  4. We will monitor our children's behavior and enforce appropriate consequences, so that our rules are respected.
  5. We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse.

YOUTH PLEDGE

I pledge to grow safe, healthy and drug free by:

  1. Understanding the dangers of drug use and abuse.
  2. Respecting myself and being drug free.
  3. Spreading the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug free.

NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK

A Safe Bus Starts with Us

It's School Bus Safety Week! Whether your child rides a school bus or not, it is important that we all understand what it takes to ensure that the children in our community arrive to school safely.

Waiting at the Bus Stop

It is important to arrive at the bus stop early, so that you are in place and waiting safely for the bus to arrive. Avoid distractions, such as using phones or listening to music, while waiting for the bus. Always stand a safe distance away from the curb, and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding. The bus stop is not the place for pushing, running, or playing. Be attentive and alert.

Loading and Unloading

The biggest danger a child encounters while riding the bus is not the ride itself, but rather getting on and off the bus safely. Children are most in danger when they are pedestrians walking to or from the school bus. It is important that the driver communicates with the children when it is safe to approach the bus for loading. When exiting the bus, children must keep good communication with the driver, listening for verbal directions and watching for visual cues that it is safe to cross the street. Always cross in front of the bus, never behind it, making sure to be far enough away so that you can see the driver. If you cannot see the driver, the driver cannot see you!

Riding the Bus

Bus riders have a very important role of keeping the environment safe while on the bus. Children should remain seated, quiet, and respectful of other's personal space at all times. Riders should never extend their arms, head, or other objects out of the window. Throwing objects out of the window not only litters the enviroment, but could also create safety hazards for passing cars and pedestrians. Riders should respect the property of the bus by helping to keep it clean. The aisle of the bus should remain clear at all times.

Always respect the flashing lights of a school bus. Be patient and allow for busses to safely load and unload our children. Practice caution when approaching busses. Stay alert and drive slowly.

New Law Affecting our 3rd Grade Students

Beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year, a new Louisiana law will take effect requiring third-grade students who are significantly underperforming in reading to repeat the grade. This legislation aims to address literacy challenges by ensuring students have foundational reading skills before advancing to fourth grade.

3rd Grade Literacy Proficiency

Reading to Learn:

TrueFlix. Worldbook. Discovery Education

Ask your children if they have noticed these sites in their ClassLink accounts, and if they have taken the time to use them. A great early-finisher activity would be to explore a topic of interest. These programs offer online books, articles, images, videos, interactive quizzes and more! The more we encourage our children to read for understanding, the more proficient and knowledgable they will become.

Need Help with Homework, Test Prep, or Understanding Class Work?

Homeworkla.org provides free online tutoring, test preparation, job search assistance, and more.  All services can be accessed from a Louisiana public library, from your home computer, or from your mobile device.

Connect with a tutor, submit a paper for review, drop off a math question, take a practice quiz, and prep for SAT/ACT exams, all in one place.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

The Power of Kindness

The simple act of choosing kindness can transform our daily lives and strengthen our relationships at school, in our homes, and in our community. As we navigate our busy schedules, let’s take a moment to reflect on why kindness matters and how we can cultivate it within daily interactions with others.

Why Kindness?

  • Fosters Connection: Acts of kindness create a sense of belonging. When we treat each other with compassion, we build stronger relationships, not just within our family but also in our wider community.

  • Promotes Empathy: Teaching our children to understand and appreciate the feelings of others nurtures empathy. By modeling kind behavior, we show them the importance of considering different perspectives.

  • Boosts Mental Health: Kindness is not only beneficial for others; it also enhances our own well-being. Studies have shown that performing acts of kindness can reduce stress, increase happiness, and even improve physical health.

  • Sets a Positive Example: Children learn by watching their parents and caregivers. When they see us choosing kindness—whether through a simple smile, a helping hand, or words of encouragement—they internalize these behaviors and carry them into their own interactions.

Simple Ways to Choose Kindness

  • Practice Gratitude: Start a family gratitude jar where everyone can drop in notes of appreciation for one another. Reading these together can foster a positive atmosphere.

  • Volunteer Together: Engage in community service as a family. Whether it’s helping at a local food bank or participating in a cleanup event, these experiences teach the value of giving back.

  • Random Acts of Kindness: Encourage family members to perform spontaneous acts of kindness—like leaving a positive note for a sibling or helping a neighbor with groceries. Celebrate these moments together!

  • Mindful Communication: Foster an environment of respectful and kind communication. Encourage family members to express their feelings honestly while being considerate of others’ emotions.

  • Story Time: Share stories or books that emphasize kindness. Discuss the characters' actions and the impact of their choices on others.

Choosing kindness is a powerful choice that can ripple through our families and communities. By making kindness a priority, we nurture love, respect, and understanding in our homes. Let’s embark on this journey together and watch as kindness transforms our daily lives.

Kindness is the choice to act with words, gifts, or actions to bring appreciation, positivity, and encouragement to yourself and others.

Kindness Challenges:

Consider setting up monthly kindness challenges within your family. For example, challenge each other to complete five acts of kindness throughout the month. At the end of the month, gather to share experiences and reflect on how it felt to be kind.

Unite Against Bullying

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

Take the Pledge together, as a family, to stand up to bullying behavior.

Awareness is the first step to ensuring that our actions, words, and behaviors towards others are kind and inclusive. Be thoughtful when it comes to choosing your words. Consider the feelings of others before speaking. Be inclusive in your actions. Take the Pledge to SAY NO TO BULLYING.

We also need to equip our children with the confidence and bravery to stand up to what may be bullying behavior. Bullying can be a difficult and painful experience, but it’s important to remember that you have the power to address it.

Here are some effective strategies students can use to confront bullying:

1. Talk to Someone You Trust

  • Share your experience with a teacher, school counselor, or a trusted family member. They can provide guidance and support.

2. Report the Bullying

  • Report the bullying to school authorities. They can work with you to create a solution.

3. Practice Assertiveness

  • If you feel comfortable, calmly and confidently tell the bully to stop. Use “I” statements, like “I don’t like what you’re doing,” to express your feelings.

4. Practice Self-Care

  • Engage in activities that make you happy and boost your self-esteem. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family.

You are not alone, and it’s okay to ask for help. Addressing bullying takes courage, and every step you take can contribute to a safer, more supportive environment for everyone.

TECHNOLOGY

Being a Responsible Digital Citizen

Responsibilty is taking action and understanding the impact of our choices. We can practice responsibility when interacting in a digital environment.

Never Be Mean on the Screen

Good digital citizens show empathy for others by taking responsibility for their words and actions online. Sharing gossip and negative images online can negatively impact others. In order to demonstrate good digital citizenship, we all need to avoid spreading hurtful information online.
