New School Year. New Initiatives. New Chances for Success.
With a new school year comes new challenges and anxieties for students and parents alike. While back-to-school time may seem routine for seasoned students and teachers, the first month of the school year remains a time of adjustment for others––especially families and students who are either transitioning to a new school or are new to the parish in general. That’s why we want to make it quick and convenient for TPSS students and families to find useful tools that will help them navigate the return to school and support their success year-round.

September is Attendance Awareness Month
The effects of staying home from school build up one absence at a time. Missing too many days can leave our children behind on their work, with a feeling of being disconnected from daily class activities.
Make it a priority to be at school.
| |
Navigate Through the Year with a Map to Success in Place
#AcceptTheChallenge
Following a solid curriculum is like having a well-thought-out map for a road trip. Just as a good map helps you reach your destination efficiently and enjoyably, a strong curriculum guides your learning journey and makes sure you cover all the important areas.
| |
If our students make it a priority to not only be at school each day, but to be actively present in their classroom interactions and participation, they will receive the most from the curriculum being taught. We want to ensure that our students are well-prepared and confident as they reach their learning goals.
-
Clear Direction: A solid curriculum provides a clear path, so you know what to learn and when. This helps you build your knowledge step by step, just like following signs on a road trip ensures you don’t get lost.
-
Balanced Learning: It ensures you get a well-rounded education, covering all the essential skills. Think of it like making sure you visit all the must-see spots on your trip rather than just sticking to one area.
-
Effective Use of Time: By following a strong curriculum, you make the most of your learning time. It's like having a planned itinerary that helps you maximize your travel experience instead of wandering aimlessly.
-
Skill Building: A good curriculum is designed to build skills progressively, helping you develop a strong foundation and advance confidently. You can campare it to learning to drive in a safe, structured way before tackling more complex routes.
-
Consistency and Quality: It helps maintain a high standard of education, ensuring that what you learn is reliable and up-to-date, much like relying on a trusted map rather than one that’s outdated or inaccurate.
As parents and guardians, you have the opportunity to ride front seat as your children navigate their way through their school career.
| |
Be sure to read important newsletters, homework notes, or emails from your child's teacher. Ask to see your child's work for the day, or have them explain what they are learning in their classes. Reach out to the teacher with questions and concerns early on. Plan to attend open house events or academic nights scheduled by your school.
Try to approach the subject of school in a positive light. School can be challenging, no doubt! But if we stay calm and stick to following the map in place, we should all successfully arrive where we need to be by the end of the trip.

Fall into Reading
When kids read, their brains get a workout, helping them think better, solve problems, and understand new things. Reading introduces kids to new words and phrases, which helps them talk and write better. Good reading skills make it easier to do well in all kinds of school subjects, not just in their reading classes.
You can encourage your child to read at home in simple ways:
- Keep books and reading materials available around the house. Have a cozy reading spot where your child can dive into a book whenever they want.
- Take trips to your public library.
- Read a bedtime story at night, or read a book after school during snack time - just make it a regular part of the day.
- Games like Scrabble, Boggle, or even simple word puzzles can be a fun way to build vocabulary and spelling skills.
- Praise your child's reading achievements, no matter how small. Celebrate their successes to keep them motivated and excited about reading.

Here's a reminder to approach the day with a positive attitude!
Practice positive thinking. When you build yourself up with positivity, you boost your self-esteem, which leads to greater confidence and motivation. High self-esteem also means better grades, stronger friendships, and a happier school day. Start your day with a positive thought and watch how it transforms your learning experience!

In this rapidly evolving digital world, our children are navigating an increasingly complex online landscape. As responsible guardians, it is our duty to guide them towards becoming responsible and respectful digital citizens. Just as we teach them life skills, we must also impart the principles of good digital citizenship.
Here's why it matters:
1. Safety First: Teach your children to protect their personal information and privacy online. Encourage them to use strong, unique passwords and to be cautious about sharing personal details.
2. Respect and Kindness: Promote respectful communication online. Teach your children about the impact of their words and actions on others, and the importance of being kind, empathetic, and inclusive in their online interactions.
3. Critical Thinking: Help your children develop critical thinking skills to assess the credibility and accuracy of online information. Encourage them to question, fact-check, and seek diverse perspectives.
4. Digital Footprint: Explain the concept of a digital footprint. Remind them that what they post online can have long-lasting consequences, affecting college admissions, job opportunities, and personal relationships.
5. Cyberbullying Awareness: Discuss cyberbullying and its consequences. Encourage your children to report any online harassment they witness or experience and to stand up against it.
6. Balance and Screen Time: Set reasonable limits on screen time and encourage a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Promote face-to-face interactions and physical activities.
7. Lead by Example: Children learn by observing. Model responsible digital behavior by practicing what you preach. Show them how to engage positively and respectfully online.
8. Open Communication: Create an environment where your children feel comfortable discussing their online experiences and concerns with you. Be nonjudgmental and supportive.
9. Keep Learning Together: Stay informed about the latest digital trends, apps, and platforms. Explore the digital world together, and learn alongside your children.
10. Encourage Creativity and Positive Use: Encourage your children to use technology for creative and educational purposes. Help them find positive online communities and outlets for their interests.
In our connected world, digital citizenship is an essential life skill. By instilling these values and practices in our children, we empower them to navigate the digital landscape responsibly, ethically, and confidently.
Let's work together to raise a generation of digital citizens who not only thrive online but also contribute positively to our global digital society.

Acceptable Use Policy
Part of the back-to-school paperwork is reading, understanding, and signing our district AUP. An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is like a set of rules that helps everyone understand how to use technology in a responsible and safe way.
We encourage our families to read the AUP together, making sure that everyone understands the expectations which are set in place.
By following the AUP, you can make sure you’re using technology in ways that help you learn and get the most out of your schoolwork.
Read Our AUP
| |
Protect Your Login
An important guideline of the AUP to follow is to protect your login information. The username and password assigned to our students allows them to access our devices, as well as important programs such as gmail, Oncourse, our Student Progress Center, and academic programs. If this login information is shared or stolen, others can access your child's important information. This could lead to issues down the road.

Stay Alert
Phishing emails (pronounced "fishing") look like they come from someone you might know or a trusted place, like your school or a popular website. These emails often ask you to click on a link or provide personal information, like your password or address. They might pretend they need this info for something important, but really, they’re trying to steal it from you.
| |
|
If you get an email that seems suspicious, don’t click on any links or share any information. Instead, ask for help to make sure you’re not falling for a trick.
Smart Devices on Campus
Overall our students are doing a fantastic job honoring the new LA state law that has been set into place for this school year. It has been an adjustment for everyone and we are proud of the efforts that have been made to follow the rules.
Devices need to be powered off and tucked away in student bookbags. They cannot be carried in pockets, or held in their hands during the instructional school day. Consequences will be enforced for violations to the law, so please continue to be mindful when bringing smart devices on campus.

Why “Shop Local” Is a Win-Win for Tangipahoa Parish
Homecoming will be here before you know it! Shopping local for the perfect suit, dress, shoes, and accessories will help to support the growth of our schools. This includes choosing to dine in our downtown restaurants, purchasing flowers from local florists, and getting your glow up on in our salons. In Tangipahoa Parish, a portion of every dollar spent at any local business contributes additional funding for our public schools and helps to secure competitive salaries and raises for TPSS educators. By supporting local businesses, you’re directly investing in the education of our children and the livelihood of our teachers.
Keeping it local is a win for everyone in our community!
