On 10 January 2022, shortly after 9:00 am local time, police received reports of a stabbing at the NTI High School in Kristianstad, located in Skane County, Sweden. The perpetrator, a 16-year-old male student who was later taken into custody, stabbed two people – another teenage boy and a teacher. While the motive for the attack was initially unknown, a day later, reports emerged that the 16-year old was close friends with the 15-year old perpetrator of the Kalleberg school attack in Eslov that took place in August 2021, in which a 40-year old man was stabbed. The Christchurch mosque attack and Columbine school shooting were said to be inspirations behind these attacks, which are intended to be carried out against Jews, Muslims, and homosexuals.

In the age of social media and internet connectivity at an all time high the world over, being able to track terrorist group recruitment has become much more difficult and complex. The introduction of platforms such as Twitter, Whatsapp, Telegram and Facebook have given terrorist groups a plethora of choices by which they can lure disgruntled and jaded individuals from society, and seemingly give them a purpose by way of violence through radicalism. Recruitment, particularly over social media, has been almost perfected to an art over the past 10 years by various terrorist organizations, but none with as much success as the Islamic State (IS). A large part of this success can be attributed to the group’s capability to target the correct sort of individuals within mainstream society in an attempt to radicalize. This recruitment package has been put to great use since 2016 in India, with one such method employed by IS recruiters being the ‘honeypot’ strategy. A honeypot is a method of recruitment where the draw to the radicalization ideology is a beautiful woman who uses her charm and good looks to draw lonely and desperate men to join her cause to impress her and please her. While various examples exist, TRAC will specifically addresses the 2022 case of Deepti Marla (aka Mariyam) and the 2016 case of Karen Aisha Hamidon. | |

On 07 January 2021, a 911 call from the Cosoleacaque – La Tinaja Highway, located south of Veracruz, reported that nine murdered people, seven men and two women, were left naked on the side of the highway with a threatening note. The damage to their bodies clearly indicated torture before death, a common tactic of Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), who created a confessional video before executing hostages. In the video, the hostages confessed to being members of Sinaloa Cartel who engaged in drug and weapons smuggling, as well as to recruiting hitmen in the area. One of those seen in the video is Alejandro Roca Andrade, the son of Dámaso Luis Roca Burgos, the cousin of the Secretary of Government, Eric Cisneros Burgos. Andrade admits he was paid five million pesos to recruit for the Sinaloa Cartel. | |

On 11 January 2022, the Baloch Republican Army (BRA) and the United Baloch Army (UBA) announced their dissolution and co-formation of the Baloch Nationalist Army (BNA).
According to the statement, the BRA spokesman, Beebagr Baloch, and the UBA spokesman, Mureed Baloch, partook in a meeting in Balochistan where they discussed Baloch national politics and the resistance war movement. It was decided that, to effectively “expand the national resistance war” and to “unite the Baloch resistance forces” against the so-called “fascist” Pakistani military, the groups would dissolve and co-operate under the name of the BNA. To conclude the statement, it is reiterated that the BNA will continue “its struggle until the complete withdrawal of the occupying forces and their allies.” It further warns that these activities will be “intensified under modern requirements.” This merger suggests that previous tensions between BRA and UBA have been resolved, particularly given the fact that the BNA will be a part of the BRAS. However, this is a dangerous development as infighting amongst Baloch separatist groups impedes the perpetration of violence.
