On 27 December 2022, the Israeli 'Shin Bet' security agency announced the arrest of Aslam Faruh, 26, responsible for the 23 November 2022 double blast in Jerusalem. According to Shin Bet, Aslam Faruh, also known as Al-Hazbar Islam Farooj and Islam Faroh, is an Islamic State (IS) supporter with a degree in mechanical engineering and no prior record.
Islamic State attacks in Israel are rare. So rare, in fact, that there are preposterous conspiracy theories that circulate among online communities saying that Israel must be funding IS because they never get attacked.
Faruh, with a 5kg bomb in his possession, was arrested in the Mishor Adumim Industrial Area, a contested area of the West Bank that now lies within the territory of Jerusalem. Clearly Faruh has been perfecting his bomb making, as the second explosion on 23 November was better controlled and the 5kg bomb found in his possession is much larger than the original two explosions.
This arrest comes two weeks after a military operation conducted by Shin Bet led to the arrest of several Palestinian militants ready to carry out a major bombing attack within Israel’s territory by means of similar IEDs used in the 23 November attack that took place hours after a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was killed by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus.
On that morning, the first explosion occurred near a bus stop, frequently crowded with commuters along the road leading to a western entry into Jerusalem. The second explosion, described as "more controlled" happened less than 30 minutes later at the Ramot crossroads in northern Jerusalem. The blasts, believed to have been activated remotely, killed a teenager and Canadian citizen, and injured at least 22 others.
