Bottom Line Up Front

On 18 January 2022, Islamic State West Africa (ISWA) - Wilayat Gharb Ifriqiyah (West Africa) released a video entitled, “Empowerment Generation” asking for new recruits to travel to Nigeria and join Islamic State’s jihad and bountiful lands. The entire video is devoted to promoting ISWA training of child soldiers, better known as ‘cubs’, with many appearing to be as young as 5-6 years old. Following the training camp footage, three separate executions are seen, all being carried out by child soldiers. ISWA often depicts children living in their base camps, but this is the first detailed account of them recruiting, indoctrinating and training children. From plates full of rice and meat to watching propaganda videos under electric fans, depicting life of cubs in Syria and Iraq, life is portrayed as exciting and fun. Life in Nigeria is arduous and images of electricity, food, shelter and clothing are bound to entice many who watch. Moreover, the video attempts to portray Wilayat West Africa as the new “Caliphate”, the clear intention. The high quality of the video, including aerial drone footage of the camp (the first ever documented use of drones by ISWA), indicates that Islamic State Central Command is investing more than mere money, foreign fighters and advice; they are investing in their media optics. The video ends with a clear call to travel for jihad (hijrah) in Nigeria.

On 14 January 2022, FSB operatives conducted raids in the Lipetsk, St. Petersburg, and Moscow regions and detained eight REvil hackers. The following day, the courts extended their detention. An FSB representative stated that the FBI shared information about the hackers with the Russian authorities and acting on this information, the FSB raided and detained several members of REvil. Their search and investigation led the FSB to shut down REvil's crypto currency accounts over multiple platforms as well as to confiscate more than one million dollars, 20 luxury cars and multiple laptops. REvil (a moniker for Ransomware Evil) is a hacker group that would threaten to publish and publicly disseminate confidential information unless a ridiculously large ransom was paid. Most notably, REvil attacked a supplier of the multinational tech giant, Apple, Inc. and stole confidential schematics for upcoming products. This group not only sent malicious software to more well-known global corporations, members of this group are allegedly responsible for nearly 5,000 infections, and collecting half a million euros in ransomware payments. At least, one of the detained hackers participated in the attack on Colonial Pipeline.

The second banner includes David Lane’s 14 Words: “we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” Notably, one of the participants appears to be wearing a Will2Rise jacket. Will2Rise specializes in fascist clothing and gives its proceeds to those involved with the Rise Above Movement (RAM).
