On 28 January 2022, a poster circulated on Telegram stating that the #131 Crew/ NSC 131 and the Aryan Freedom Network (AFN) are now allied in New England, United States. This is a highly notable development. Although not a novel phenomenon and despite the fact that it is a rising global threat, white nationalism has failed to advance as a cohesive, unified, or even an organized movement. This is likely due to the fact that infighting is common amongst white supremacist groups. Indeed, various ideological differences characterize right-wing extremism, preventing it from gaining the traction necessary for the creation of a collective unified force. Yet, instead of amplifying existent tensions between the ideological subdivisions, the Aryan Freedom Network strives to support white nationalism globally – including neo-Confederate, National Socialist, Ku Klux Klan, racist skinhead, and other white nationalist organizations and platforms. While the group specifically espouses Christian Identity ideals and theories, it maintains that any white-power activism is legitimate and that these groups must cooperate rather than fight amongst each other in order to ‘save’ the white race. The current alliance suggests these efforts are working and actively underway. With the new alliance, now NSC 131 Crew can no longer claim that they are merely a 'fight club'; they are now officially White Nationalists.

Islamic State’s Al-Azaim Foundation Releases the
First Issue of Islamic State Khurasan’s (ISK)
‘Voice of Khurasan’ Magazine in English

On 31 January 2022, Islamic States’ Al-Azaim Foundation released the first issue of Islamic State Khurasan’s (ISK) ‘Voice of Khurasan’ magazine in English. The contents of the magazine bear a stark similarity to the media typically promoted by Islamic State’s powerful propaganda apparatus, particularly that espoused within the very popular Dabiq Magazine. The magazine primarily asserts a hard-hitting depiction of the Taliban (IEA) in Afghanistan, while also providing a detailed overview of the recent prison attack in Syria, and a biography of Abdelrahman al-Loghari, the ISK member who conducted the suicide bombing at Kabul airport during evacuation. In the social media age, with interconnectivity at an all time high the world over, propaganda and recruitment has been almost perfected by various militant groups, but none with as much success as the Islamic State. Yet, at 37 pages of mostly text, the ‘Voice of Khurasan’ is certainly longer than Islamic State's typical publications, a fact which may result in decreased readership because of the length. It is, however, the first issue released in English and it is highly likely the Voice of Khurasan will improve overtime. Further, the fact that it was released in English, it is evident that Islamic State hopes to attract foreign fighters to join the jihad in Wilayat Khurasan – inclusive of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. The publication of the ‘Voice of Khurasan’ thus provides further evidence of a trend TRAC has long observed. Contrary to a communal desire of some political wings and the general population who believe or want to believe that Islamic State has been completely destroyed, it hasn’t. The Islamic State remains.

Anonymous Anarchist - German Anarchist 10 January 2022 Arson Attack on Eight Municipal Police Vehicles Parked on the Schimmelstraße in Halle, Saale, Lower-Saxony, Germany
| |

In early January 2022, German anarchists committed a targeted arson attack on eight municipal police vehicles parked on the Schimmelstraße in Halle, Germany. The cars suffered significant damage. Anarchists see police forces as an extension of the government and therefore, they frequently choose police squad cars as targets for their attacks. Although anarchists don’t always publish a direct claim of an attack, they are known to publish celebratory news items as a nod that the attack was indeed "one of their own."

Manifesto of Matthew Christopher Harris,
Former UCLA Professor Colorado, United States
| |
Images: Cover of Manifesto published by Harris
On 2 February 2022, a former University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) professor, Matthew Christopher Harris, was taken into custody in Boulder, Colorado. Police report that Harris was detained as he allegedly sent threats to the university, even emailing the the staff and students of the philosophy department a link to his 800-page manifesto. To briefly summarize, the piece serves to motivate Black people to “end America.” While the majority of the manifesto encourages readers to kill White people – with several pages alone dedicated to the statement “KILL ALL CRACKERS FOR BEING THE ENEMY OF N*IGGERS FOR 450 YEARS!” – it also incorporates racism against Asian people and Jewish people. In essence, the manifesto contains extreme accounts of violence, advocating killings, shootings, and bombings. Harris also talks about carrying out a mass barricade-hostage event; however, it is unlikely many will read the manifesto in its entirety given its length and chaotic, repetitive, and bizarre nature.
