In 2023, minors who attended Shakahola Good News International Church were promised heaven if they starved themselves to death. Tragically, 191 young people died. The “pastor” of that “cult” is in custody awaiting trial.
The Kenyan government, reacting to this tragedy (as well as other recent troubling instances within religious communities) began proposing stricter guidelines, requiring a certain level of theological training for clergy. These guidelines have the potential of not only restricting access to pulpits, but also to youth leaders who have been providing devotionals and religious training in schools.
As a result of these potentially restrictive propositions, Reach Out’s Africa Director, Charles Juma, began to pray about a solution. In a short time, Charles was able to reach an agreement with Logos Bible College to begin providing Biblical training to our leaders. In the fall of 2023, the first classes were offered.
