Winter Storm Debris Removal

Multiple Routes
Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones on the following routes in the Fredericksburg District next week for debris removal. Contractor crews continue to collect debris from the state right-of-way following the Jan. 3, 2022, winter storm.
Debris removal is anticipated to be underway through late spring 2022, with an estimated 300,000 cubic yards of debris to remove, which is equivalent to around 27,000 dump truck loads. More information about how routes are being prioritized for debris removal is available in this news release.

I-95 Southbound

Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 130 (Route 3)
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Varying single lane closure and shoulder closures in local lanes between interchanges. Underdrain cleaning and Improve 95 project construction.

Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 133 (Route 17)
Monday, 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure between these interchanges for Improve 95 project construction.
 
Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure between these interchanges for Improve 95 project construction.
 
Exit 133 (Route 17) to Exit 130 (Route 3)
Monday Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Single lane closure in the local lanes between these interchanges. Permit work. Utility installation at Rappahannock River bridge area. 

I-95 Northbound

Exit 130 (Route 3) to Exit 133 (Route 17)
Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure for mobile pothole repair, and moving construction equipment.

Exit 133, Collector-Distributor Ramp
Wednesday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The collector-distributor ramp will remain open at all times, but stay alert for crews installing barrier along the ramp shoulder.

Exit 133 to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway)
Monday – Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Single lane closure between these interchanges for Improve 95 project construction.
 
Tuesday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Single lane closure between these interchanges for Improve 95 project construction.

Stafford County

Route 3 Business Eastbound, Westbound
Monday, 7 a.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Single lane closure on Route 3 eastbound between Cool Springs Road and Chatham Heights Road for bridge work. Crews are working under the structure over the CSX railroad.
 
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily. Single lane closure on Route 3 westbound over the CSX railroad, between Chatham Heights Road and Cool Springs Road. Work connected with bridge rehabilitation project.

Route 17 Southbound
Wednesday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Single lane closure near Sanford Drive and South Gateway Drive intersection. Cleaning drainage system.

Route 8900 (Centreport Parkway)
Monday – Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Right turn lane will be closed on Centreport Parkway at Route 1 for Improve 95 project construction. 

City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County

Chatham Bridge
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Alternating, single lane closures on Route 3 Business between River Road and the city limits for final construction activities as part of the Chatham Bridge rehabilitation project. The shared-use path on the Chatham Bridge will also close each day during the work zone, but the path will be reopened for use at all other times. 
 
Spotsylvania County

Route 17 (Mills Drive)
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Expect one-way, alternating traffic between Germanna Point Drive and Old Dominion Parkway. A flagging crew will direct traffic through the work zone. Crews will be grading and trimming trees as part of the Route 17 overpass replacement at I-95.

Caroline County

Route 207 Northbound
Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Bridge inspection over CSX railroad tracks. Single lane closure northbound.

Route 207 near Dry Bridge Road
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guardrail Repair. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 207 near Dry Bridge Road.

Gloucester County

Route 17
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mobile operation to install rumble strips at various locations on Route 17 in Gloucester County.

Route 33
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mobile operation to install rumble strips at various locations on Route 33 in Gloucester County.

King and Queen County

Route 33
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Mobile operation to install rumble strips at various locations on Route 33 in King and Queen County.

King George County

Guardrail Repair
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closures or flagging operations on the following routes for guardrail installation and removal:

  • Route 3 near Fletcher Chapel Road
  • Route 3 eastbound near Lambs Creek Church Road
  • Route 610 (Indiantown Road) near Route 218 

Northumberland County

Route 201
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating single lane closures or flagging operations near the Route 3 intersection for guardrail removal and installation. 

Additional Projects in Fredericksburg District

Caroline County

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road)
Construction is underway to improve safety at the Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road) intersection in the Chilesburg area of Caroline County. The project will improve sight distance and realign and flatten a curve at the intersection. Dedicated right turn lanes will be added from westbound Ladysmith Road to Partlow Road, and from southbound Partlow Road to Anderson Mill Road. A stop sign will be added to control southbound Partlow Road traffic. The project is expected to be complete in August 2022.
 
Ladysmith Safety Rest Area, I-95 Southbound
Construction is underway to expand the number of parking spaces for trucks and larger commercial vehicles at the Ladysmith Safety Area in Caroline County on I-95 southbound. The rest area remains open to travelers, and existing parking remains available. Construction is anticipated to be complete in May 2022.

Route 665 (Dodge City Road) Bridge Replacement

Dodge City Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Beverly Run in Caroline County for a bridge replacement project. The road is anticipated to reopen to traffic next week, between Feb. 14-18, 2022, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to use following recommended routes as a detour:

  • Route 665 (Dodge City Road)
  • Route 625 (Passing Road)
  • Route 618 (Beverly Run Road)

City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County

Route 3 Business at Chatham Bridge
Chatham Bridge reopened to vehicle traffic in October 2021 after being closed since June 2020 for an improvement project. Periodic lane closures will be needed as construction work to repair the substructure, below the bridge deck, continues through April 2022. 

King George County

The right southbound lane on Route 301 between Roseland Drive and Barnsfield Road will remain closed through Feb. 2022 for bridge construction and realignment of the roadway as part of a Maryland Transportation Authority project to replace the Nice-Middleton Bridge over the Potomac River. The right northbound lane on Route 301 will remain closed through April 2022.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)
County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. A timeline to restore and reopen the road is under development. 
 
Stafford County

Route 1 at Potomac Creek
Construction is underway to replace the Route 1 bridge over Potomac Creek in Stafford County. Route 1 will continue to have four travel lanes open during the project, with only periodic single lane closures required. The new bridge is anticipated to be complete in early 2022.
 
Route 3 Business Bridge Rehabilitation
A bridge rehabilitation project is underway on Route 3 Business eastbound over the CSX railroad tracks, between Cool Springs Road and Chatham Heights Road. A single lane is closed continuously on weekdays, beginning on Mondays at 6 a.m. through 8 p.m. Fridays. All lanes are open on weekends. The weekday lane closure is anticipated to be required through Feb. 2022.
 
Spotsylvania County

Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive
Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and lanes that are shifted to the east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.
 
Route 17 Overpass Replacement and Widening
Construction started in December 2020 on a project to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.
 
Lafayette Boulevard Turn Lane Extension
Construction is underway to extend the existing southbound right turn lane on Lafayette Boulevard from Harrison Road to Lee Street. This will improve capacity and reduce congestion for southbound traffic turning onto Harrison Road. The project is expected to be complete in May 2022.

Town of West Point and New Kent County

Route 30/33 (Eltham Bridge)
Westbound single lane closure on Eltham Bridge, with work zone barrier. This lane closure is anticipated to remain in place until spring 2022. Crews are identifying locations where a future project will repair post-tensioned bridge girders.
