Additional Projects in Fredericksburg District

Caroline County

Route 1 over South River Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction started in Feb. 2023 on a $4 million project to rehabilitate the Route 1 bridge over the South River, which is located in the Ladysmith area. The condition of the 97-year-old bridge will be improved through substructure and superstructure repairs, and installation of a new, smoother travel surface. Route 1 is reduced to two lanes to accelerate construction. All lanes will reopen in July 2024, when construction is anticipated to be complete.

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection. A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

Essex County

Route 612 (Bestland Road) Bridge Replacement Project

Route 612 (Bestland Road) is closed to through traffic through late June 2023 to replace a bridge over Dragon Run. The project is replacing the previous timber deck bridge with a new 48-foot concrete slab structure on concrete abutments and piles. Click here to view an online detour map.

King George County

Route 206 and Route 218 Turn Lane

This project is building a dedicated right turn lane from westbound Route 206 (Dahlgren Road) to westbound Route 218 (Caledon Road). The existing travel lane will be marked as a through lane to go straight or turn left onto Route 632 (St. Paul’s Road). The project will be complete in October 2023.

Route 301 and the Nice-Middleton Bridge Replacement Project

The new Nice/Middleton Bridge is now open to traffic over the Potomac River. Road work continues on Route 301 near the approaches. Read MDTA’s release here

King and Queen County and King William County

Route 628 (Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road) Bridge Closure

Dorrell Road/Spring Cottage Road is closed at the bridge over the Mattaponi River, located at the King and Queen and King William county line. The road will remain closed until further notice while a bridge repair project is designed and constructed. During a routine inspection, crews identified significant deterioration in key bridge elements, and the bridge was closed in March 2023 for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the detour route.

Mathews County

Route 223 (Old Ferry Road) over Milford Haven at Gwynn's Island

Temporary traffic signals are installed on Route 223 at each approach to the bridge over Milford Haven. One-way, alternating traffic will remain in place, controlled by the temporary signals, through fall 2023 due to a bridge maintenance project. Bridge openings for marine traffic have resumed at six scheduled times a day.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. A bridge replacement is under construction. County Bridge Road will remain closed to through traffic until the new bridge reopens by April 26, 2024.

Spotsylvania County

I-95 Southbound Exit 126 Off-Ramp and Route 1 Southbound

Construction is underway to build a second right turn lane from the I-95 southbound off-ramp at exit 126 onto Route 1 southbound. Route 1 southbound is being widened from the off-ramp to Southpoint Parkway with an additional turn lane. A second right turn lane is being added from Route 1 southbound to Southpoint Parkway. Traffic islands will be installed along Southpoint Parkway as a safety improvement to allow left turns into driveways but restrict through and left-turning traffic from side streets. Additional right turn lane added to Southpoint Parkway approaching Route 1. Project completion in August 2025.

Route 1 and Market Street

Construction is underway to build triple left turns from westbound Market Street to Route 1 southbound, with a fourth lane on Market Street becoming a shared through/right turn lane. A shared through/right turn lane on Route 1 southbound at the intersection will tie into the I-95 northbound on-ramp at exit 126, south of the intersection. New sidewalks will be added along westbound Market Street, on Route 1 southbound, and along a short area on Route 1 northbound. Crosswalks will span Market Street and Route 1, controlled by pedestrian crossing signal equipment. Project completion in December 2023.

Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive

Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and for lanes shifted east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in early June 2023.

Route 17 (Mills Drive) Overpass Replacement and Widening

Construction started in Dec. 2020 to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four lanes until just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.

Route 208 (Courthouse Road) and Hood Drive

On Hood Drive, new right and left turn lanes are under construction at the U.S. Veterans Health Administration outpatient clinic under construction. Additional turn lanes will be built on northbound Hood Drive approaching Courthouse Road. A raised median on Hood Drive will separate northbound and southbound traffic between Courthouse Road and McGowan Drive. Additional sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed at the intersection. Project completion in June 2024.

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) Widening

Construction recently began to widen Mudd Tavern Road to four lanes between I-95 and Route 1. A new secondary access route, Route 2092, will be built parallel to Mudd Tavern Road, and will connect with South Roxbury Mill Road and Dan Bell Lane. Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road/Morris Road) is reduced to a single lane approaching the traffic signal at the Route 1 intersection through spring 2024 to allow space for widening activities. Project completion in May 2025.

Westmoreland County

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle)

Route 658 (Monroe Bay Circle) is reduced to a single travel lane with a temporary bridge spanning Monroe Creek. A temporary traffic signal is directing one-way, alternating traffic. The bridge is a temporary measure to maintain traffic flow while a replacement project is advanced. The road was closed to through traffic from late December 2022-March 2023 after a hole formed in the road, following a pipe failure at the crossing of Monroe Creek.
