Leveraging Wejo Connected

Vehicle Data

Wejo is a data, analytics and software-as-a-service provider that analyzes connected and electric vehicle data to create real-time insights. At a recent TRCC meeting, Texas A&M Transportation Institute's (TTI's) Michael Martin discussed how this data is aggregated and used to detect trends and clusters of events in both rural and urban areas. When leveraged correctly, Wejo data layers the broad strokes and fine details of crash records to a build a story.

"Understanding and predicting crashes requires knowing the context in which they occur," explained Martin. "And for the first time, we can now observe actual driving behavior straight from millions of vehicles on the roadways."

Martin challenged members to start thinking about how TRCC can best utilize Wejo data to make roads safer, smarter and more sustainable.

EMS & Trauma Registry Integration

Texas Department of State Health Services' (DSHS) Jia Benno, discussed DSHS initiatives at the TRCC Member Roundtable. In her role at DSHS, Benno uses data to understand the impact of injuries, identify public health issues and provide data to support programs focused on preventing future injuries.

In partnership with TTI, DSHS is working on creating a dashboard to share emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma data with stakeholders by implementing data linkage using the universally unique identifier (UUID) in the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS).This data will be integrated with the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT's) Crash Records Information System.

"What's exciting about this is that the EMS agency can share the UUID with the state to the nation with no lingering relationship to a patient, hospital or state," says Benno. "This means that local hospitals, EMS agencies, states and national registries all have the same unique link between records for trauma patients."

The UUID will be implemented when the state moves towards NEMSIS version 3.5 later this year.

Valery Wakefield

Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS)

Valery Wakefield is an assistant manager with TXDPS in License and Record Service, Driver License Division. She has been with the department since 2003 and currently oversees Conviction Reporting. Her extensive knowledge of the conviction and enforcement processes make her an excellent resource. Her team is responsible for placing traffic, non-traffic enforcements and convictions on the record for Texas and all other states.
