Program Roots

In an effort to keep our TREE Press readers informed about the grant programs offered by TREE Fund, we will occasionally spotlight the details of a particular grant program to demonstrate its importance to the arboricultural, urban forestry, landscape architecture and related professional communities which we proudly serve. This month, we are spotlighting the Hyland R. Johns Grant Program.

Established in 1995 to honor one of the leaders in the arboriculture industry and a founder of the ISA Research Trust, the Hyland R. Johns Grant Program funds longer term research and technology transfer projects that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arborists.

The Hyland R. Johns Grant Program focuses on the following areas:

  • Urban forest management: Assessment, inventory, removal, pruning, and decision making.
  • Ecosystem service: Impact of weather and interaction with other biota.
  • Tree health: Identification and management of biotic agents that are suspected or know to affect tree health.
  • Decay: Study of decay in trees.

Over the past five years, TREE Fund has awarded $198,789 for research under the Hyland R. Johns Grant Program. The research from our most recent TREE Fund Webinar, presented by Dr. Andy Kaufman, was made possible with a grant from this program, and the link to the video of the webinar can be found here. To better align our research portfolio and calendar, the 2023 grantmaking cycle for this program has shifted from the Spring to the Autumn season.

TREE Fund Ramblings: Mentions and thanks

TREE Fund has recently received.

"The summer of 2010 was my first exposure to TREE Fund and Tour des Trees. It was the summer before my senior year of high school, and I was deep in the weeds of making a university selection. I attended the Tour with my dad and twin brother, and left the experience determined to pursue a career in arboriculture. While returning from the event I began the application process with Iowa State University, and ultimately graduated with a degree in forestry.

During my time at Iowa State I was fortunate to receive TREE Fund scholarship support. This support made it possible for me to afford tuition and focus on my studies. TREE Fund’s network of Tour riders and donors also served as a guide as I entered the professional world. After graduation from Iowa State I spent time in Nebraska completing a master’s degree in community and regional planning. At that same time I was also given the opportunity to intern with the Arbor Day Foundation. This internship was a result of a connection made on Tour des Trees, and it catapulted my career in urban forestry. I have since served in various non-profit positions, and now work as a regional recruiter for Davey Tree (another supporter of TREE Fund). I am extremely grateful to TREE Fund donors and partners who have mentored and supported my career up to this point. Thank you!"
