Excavation & Trench Safety
As construction and maintenance projects ramp up this spring, April is the perfect time to refocus on one of the most hazardous activities in our industry—excavation and trenching.
Trench collapses remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction. What makes them especially dangerous is how quickly they happen—often with little to no warning. A single cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car, placing immense pressure on workers in an unprotected trench.
Key Safety Reminders
Before any excavation begins, make sure your team is prepared:
-
Always locate and mark underground utilities
-
Ensure proper protective systems are in place (sloping, shoring, or shielding)
-
Keep spoil piles and equipment at least 2 feet from the edge
-
Provide safe access and egress for trenches 4 feet or deeper
-
Conduct daily inspections—and after any change in conditions
The Role of the Competent Person
OSHA requires a Competent Person on-site for excavation work—someone who can identify hazards and has the authority to take immediate corrective action. This role is critical in preventing cave-ins and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Build Your Team’s Expertise
Our Excavation Competent Person Training course is designed to equip supervisors and field leaders with the knowledge and confidence to manage excavation risks effectively. Participants will learn how to:
- Classify soil types
- Select and implement protective systems
- Conduct thorough site inspections
- Recognize and correct hazards before they become incidents
Don’t wait for an incident to highlight the importance of trench safety. Invest in training and reinforce safe practices now—because when it comes to excavation, every decision matters and every life counts.
