PSA: Share the Road. Every Life Counts.

Every day, our roadways are shared by drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians—each with a family waiting for them to return home safely. That’s why this month’s safety reminder is simple but powerful: Share the Road. Every Life Counts.

Whether you’re behind the wheel of a company vehicle or commuting to work, small actions make a big difference:

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions
  • Give cyclists and motorcycles extra space
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Slow down in work zones and high-traffic areas

For employers, this is also a great time to reinforce safe driving expectations with your teams—especially those who drive as part of their job.

Safety doesn’t stop at the workplace gate. By practicing patience and awareness on the road, we help protect not only ourselves—but everyone around us.

Share the road. Because every life truly counts.

The TRMA Annual Awards Dinner once again brought together industry leaders, safety professionals, and member organizations for an evening dedicated to recognizing excellence, celebrating progress, and reinforcing a shared commitment to safety. Building on strong traditions, this year’s dinner showcased even greater achievements across the TRMA community.

Building Tomorrow’s Workforce—Together

On March 8th, the annual Manufacturing Advisory Council Meeting was held at the Joliet Junior College Event Center, bringing together local manufacturers and educators for a focused and collaborative discussion on workforce development needs.

During this 90-minute session, participants shared valuable insights on the current needs and challenges facing both industry and education. The meeting provided a meaningful opportunity for manufacturers to directly contribute to the development of the region’s future workforce by offering real-world perspectives on skills, training, and workplace expectations.

Feedback from this discussion plays a critical role in helping local high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs stay aligned with evolving industry demands. By strengthening this connection between education and manufacturing, the Advisory Council continues to support the growth of a strong pipeline of skilled talent for our region.

We appreciate the participation and commitment of all attendees who are helping shape the future of manufacturing.

Now Accepting Nominations for Manufacturing Excellence Awards

Excellence deserves recognition—and now is your opportunity to shine a spotlight on it.

The Illinois Manufacturers' Association (IMA), in partnership with Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC), has officially opened nominations for the 2026 Manufacturing Excellence Awards—a prestigious program celebrating the very best in Illinois manufacturing.

From innovation and safety to workforce development and community impact, these awards honor the companies and leaders driving our industry forward. Manufacturing remains the largest contributor to Illinois’ economy, employing more than 650,000 workers and shaping communities across the state.

Make an Impact

Recognition begins with a nomination. Take a few minutes to highlight a company that is making a difference in manufacturing—whether it’s your own organization, a partner, or a peer.

Nominations are open now, but don’t wait – submissions are due by April 9, 2026.

Excavation & Trench Safety

As construction and maintenance projects ramp up this spring, April is the perfect time to refocus on one of the most hazardous activities in our industry—excavation and trenching

Trench collapses remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction. What makes them especially dangerous is how quickly they happen—often with little to no warning. A single cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car, placing immense pressure on workers in an unprotected trench.

Key Safety Reminders

Before any excavation begins, make sure your team is prepared:

  • Always locate and mark underground utilities
  • Ensure proper protective systems are in place (sloping, shoring, or shielding)
  • Keep spoil piles and equipment at least 2 feet from the edge
  • Provide safe access and egress for trenches 4 feet or deeper
  • Conduct daily inspections—and after any change in conditions

The Role of the Competent Person

OSHA requires a Competent Person on-site for excavation work—someone who can identify hazards and has the authority to take immediate corrective action. This role is critical in preventing cave-ins and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Build Your Team’s Expertise

Our Excavation Competent Person Training course is designed to equip supervisors and field leaders with the knowledge and confidence to manage excavation risks effectively. Participants will learn how to:

  • Classify soil types
  • Select and implement protective systems
  • Conduct thorough site inspections
  • Recognize and correct hazards before they become incidents

Don’t wait for an incident to highlight the importance of trench safety. Invest in training and reinforce safe practices now—because when it comes to excavation, every decision matters and every life counts
