How TRUMomentum?
The Recipe to Positive Momentum
by Dean Anan Alkarmi
In physics, momentum not only is associated with motion but also with direction. For example, moving forward is positive momentum, moving backward is negative momentum, and if not moving there is no momentum in any direction.
Self-motivation is the drive to achieve positive momentum. Each one of us must have a goal to make today better than yesterday, and a plan that will make tomorrow a better day than today.
It is quite natural to face obstacles that stop or reverse our positive momentum in the way of achieving goals. Taking a timeout is a good step to refocus on vision and mission and turn obstacles into opportunities. This will keep us moving forward to reflect the look and feel of Truman College.

English Faculty Presents at Conference | On February 15, 2023, Associate Professor Kate Gillespie presented at the Two-Year College English Association Conference as part of the Conference on College Composition & Communication Annual Convention at the Hilton Chicago. The panel focused on the theme “Working in and across Institutional Teams” and included faculty from New York, Texas, and Utah. Kate’s presentation, “Staying Connected through the Pandemic: Assessing Students’ Needs and Collaborating to Improve Instruction in First-Year Composition," explained the ECTJ Department’s assessment study of English 101 student writing, its professional development activities for English 101 instructors, and its digital portfolio assessment practices. The feedback from attendees indicated that Truman College’s assessment practices are robust and offer useful models for other colleges. |

Spring 2023 Meet and Greet
On Wednesday, March 29, 2023, the Office of Instruction team hosted the first room 162 Meet and Greet in Campus & Beyond from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Students and faculty/staff played games, ate snacks, shared prizes, and had fun. It was a chance for the Truman community to come together and get to know Team Instruction and one another. The question of the day was: Would you rather live a world with no pizza or eat pizza three times a week? The three-times-a-week pizza lovers prevailed. Thank you to everyone who participated. The Office of Instruction hopes to see even more familiar faces in the fall!

A Message from the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs | |
Some claim that in a 2001 speech, activist, statesman, and Nobel Prize winner, Nelson Mandela, proclaimed, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” This statement perfectly describes my sentiments of the spring semester. Truman has seen personnel transitions, space refreshes, and new centers of opportunities for the advancement of faculty collaboration and student engagement. All of these accomplishments challenged us to think outside the box, as we collectively envisioned and took steps to bolster Truman as a stalwart in our community.
Although our work is not done, I want to take a moment to acknowledge all of you and your dedication to making Academic Year 2022-2023 a success. As we prepare to end AY 22-23, my hopes for you are that…
-
your preparations for final exams and projects go smoothly;
-
you profess loudly and boldly well-wishes to our graduates for their embracement;
- you forgive yourself for any perceived shortcomings and anticipate new achievements; and
- you make space to enjoy the sun, as we head into warmer days.
We are One Truman—always.
-V.P. Gail
