Registration Now Open for Housing Connection Training June 17 - 21 in Dallas

We're pleased to announce that registration for our 2019 Housing Connection training is now open. Classes are available to housing or counseling nonprofits, units of local government, or community based organizations that provide home buyer education, financial education or affordable housing. TSAHC has contracted with NeighborWorks America to offer the following courses:

HO103: Lending Basics for Homeownership Counselors (Monday-Wednesday) - $75

ML120: Strategic Thinking and Planning (Tuesday-Wednesday) - $50

HO210: Practice, Study, Success: Test Strategies for HUD's

Counselor Exam (Thursday-Friday) - $50

AH102: Basic Steps of Affordable Housing Development (Thursday-Friday) - $50

Frost Bank Awards $5,000 Grant to TSAHC

TSAHC would like to thank and recognize Frost Bank for their generous $5,000 grant to support Housing Connection , our training initiative for nonprofit housing organizations. Their investment will support a week-long training workshop in June 2019 to be hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

With this grant, Frost Bank is helping to strengthen Texas’ nonprofit network to ensure nonprofits can continue to provide high quality housing and financial education to Texas families.

HEART Program Update:

New Webinars for Nonprofits

The HEART Program , created by TSAHC and Enterprise Community Partners, provides grants and technical assistance to nonprofits providing housing assistance to families displaced or otherwise affected by Hurricane Harvey.

We're excited to announce a second round of technical assistance webinars offered through the HEART Program. These webinars are open to any nonprofit , regardless of whether you are a HEART grantee.

TSAHC is hiring a Marketing/Communications Intern who will assist with various projects and activities for 20 hours per week during a 12 week period. The Intern will work in TSAHC's Austin office under the guidance of the External Relations Manager.

Three Issues Contributing to Rural America’s Affordable Housing Crisis

Housing affordability, long considered primarily an urban issue, is now becoming a major concern in rural areas.

According to an article published in Stateline, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts, nearly a quarter of America’s rural counties have seen a significant increase in the number of households spending half of their income on housing.

Stay Up to Date on Fair Housing Issues and Resources

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law on April 11, 1968. Every year, to commemorate its passage, the month of April is designated as Fair Housing Month.

The Fair Housing Act, formally known as Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, protects Americans’ right to rent an apartment, buy a home, obtain a mortgage, and/or purchase homeowners insurance by making it illegal to discriminate based on the following categories.

New Report Highlights Shortage of Affordable and Available Rental Homes

In March, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) released a report that revealed a shortage of seven million affordable and available rental homes for extremely low-income renters.

Extremely low-income households earn 30 percent or below the area median income, and an affordable rent amount is considered no more than 30 percent of household income going towards housing.
