Happy New Year TSC
I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope you are having a well-deserved restful winter break and enjoying time with family and loved ones.

As our enrollment continues to grow, 2019 will be a year for several new construction projects. Watch for progress on renovations to Harrison High School, McCutcheon High School and Battle Ground Middle School. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we move forward with these improvements.

It's my hope that as we add more classroom space, we continue to build and improve on our educational successes. This includes more opportunities at the Greater Lafayette Career Academy that opens in the fall. There's a lot of excitement from local businesses and other organizations about this community effort to prepare our students for college, technical certifications and the workforce. Stay tuned for more information in 2019.

Wishing you a productive semester that inspires success and lifelong learning,

Scott Hanback
Superintendent

Mindfulness Matters
Mindfulness exercises improve attention, reduce anxiety and improve working memory.

Of our waking hours, the mind wanders 50-percent of the time. Focused attention exercises (being mindful) cultivate the brain’s ability to focus on one single object. Examples include the following activities where you specifically note what sensations you are experiencing during the activity: mindful walking, getting grounded, and taking a body scan by intentionally listening to what your body parts are feeling.

Making a daily commitment to practice mindfulness will enable you to be more fully present with the people around you.

Mindfulness Matters
As we begin 2019, consider adopting a mindfulness practice .

INSPIRATION MATTERS
With Kathy Nimmer

While sitting with Harrison's National Honor Society on Christmas Eve at the mall as they wrapped gifts for last-minute shoppers, I overheard an adorable conversation between an NHS member and a child who sounded about 5 years old. The child said, as he handed over the gift to be wrapped,"This is the gift that will make her happy." The recipient was the child's mother, but I felt equally gifted. What if we live each day with a commitment to finding something to give to others, whether tangible or not, that is perfectly suited to bring happiness to someone else? I have a hunch that even Santa was not as anticipated by the mall child as was his presenting of that gift to his mother. What a valuable lesson to learn from a little one during one of the most magical seasons of the year.
