Message from the Executive Director

The Schools Foundation kicked off October with our first Principally Speaking Network session for the 2025-26 school year! Principally Speaking Network “PSN” is a professional development program for school administrators designed to assist participants in increasing student achievement through more effective leadership practices.

On October 2nd, we welcomed almost 300 administrators from 22 school systems across North Alabama! Dr. Benda Mendiola, Dr. Anna Sheppard-Jones, and Mr. Damon West were guest speakers for our focus on leadership. Dr. Debi Edwards led our book study session. School administrators enjoyed a wonderful day learning and networking with local colleagues!

Sincerely,

Jeanne Baird Greer

Buckhorn High School Hosts US Navy’s Strike Group

with a Mixed Reality Experience

Buckhorn High School became the first school in our region to host the U.S. Navy’s Strike Group — a traveling, state-of-the-art mixed-reality experience that immerses students in the technology, teamwork, and adventure of modern naval operations.

Designed to inspire future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), the Strike Group lets students step into the role of a Navy professional through lifelike, interactive simulations that highlight the innovation and skill behind every mission.

“From the depths of the sea to the heights of the stars, America’s Navy is the most highly skilled, technologically advanced military force in the world,” said Rear Admiral James P. Waters, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command.

“A STEM career in the Navy offers unmatched opportunities for growth and discovery, and the Strike Group brings that experience to life.”

A big “Thank You” to the U.S. Navy for providing this incredible learning experience and for their unwavering service to our nation. Better together 💙

Lee High School is Bird Watching

Lee High School’s Green Ambassadors have officially launched their second year partnering with the Land Trust of North Alabama, this time focusing on creating a bird-friendly campus!

Naturalist Educator Laura Lambert joined the team to introduce students to birding and the basics of identifying birds by shape, size, color, and habitat. Students then headed outside to practice binocular and field guide skills, spotting birds right here in our courtyard.

Last year’s partnership with LTNA culminated in the planting of native species across campus, and this year’s initiative will expand those efforts by adding bird-safe window films, mini bird habitats, and migratory bird counts led by our students.

Senior Saniya Davis shared, “We had so much fun working with the Land Trust of North Alabama last year… I’m excited to see what we do this year, especially with our new and returning members.”

Fellow Green Ambassador Molly Masterson added, “I’ve been exploring more Environmental Science-related college tracks because of the stuff we’ve been doing—it’s shown me I have a passion for these things I never considered.”

We’re so grateful for this continuing partnership with the Land Trust of North Alabama and the opportunities it gives our students to learn, lead, and make Lee High’s campus a haven for wildlife!

🌿 Want to help? Our Green Ambassadors welcome donations of native plants, bird feeders, bird seed, binoculars, or funds to support both current and future environmental initiatives. Every contribution helps our students continue creating a more sustainable and bird-friendly Lee High! Contact Mr. McDonald at Kevin.McDonald@hsv-k12.org.
