Medicaid Unwinding Update
On January 5, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued an Informational Bulletin (see link below) announcing that State Medicaid programs can begin Medicaid eligibility redeterminations beginning February 1, 2023 and disenrollment April 1, 2024. This process, known as “Medicaid Unwinding”, is intended to address the end of the continuous enrollment requirements for the Medicaid program during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE).
States can start sending out letters to Medicaid enrollees asking for income verification or other information as soon as the beginning of next month. This makes it that much more urgent for Tribal Health Programs to work with their States and with their patients to ensure they respond to any such requests for information from State Medicaid plans.
