Light up a Life Gala: A Night to Remember

Take Stock in Children of Nassau County (TSICN) once again set a fundraising record at its annual Light Up a Life Gala at the The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Celebrating the power of a generous community, the event exceeded its fundraising goal – fueling scholarships, mentorship, and the critical support systems that help students build strong futures.

Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres while browsing the silent auction. From exclusive travel experiences to one-of-a-kind local offerings, the auction showcased the array of Nassau County’s businesses and supporters. The cocktail hour created anticipation as attendees connected and rallied around a shared purpose.

The event was hosted by First Coast News anchor and former TSIC mentor, Heather Crawford, who brought warmth and enthusiasm to the night. Guests were treated to a surprise welcome into the dining room by vocalists from the Amelia Island Opera.

Speaking to a full ballroom, Board Chair Regina Lee welcomed guests and recognized the donors, mentors and community partners who make this work possible. Executive Director Alexis Holton shared her personal connection to the mission and the organization’s vision for the future. Her powerful story highlighted what happens when a student is anchored by consistent support, high expectations, and people who believe in their potential.

Guests enjoyed dinner as the program continued with one of the most moving moments of the night. Ellie Holton, a 2024 graduate of West Nassau High School, took the stage to share a personal journey. Ellie spoke with courage about challenges faced, the benefit of having consistent mentoring, and the confidence instilled through the program. Ellie reflected on what it means to have someone believe in you—sometimes before you fully believe in yourself—and how that belief has opened doors to new opportunities, new goals, and a future that once felt out of reach. This story served as a powerful reminder that behind every scholarship is a student with determination, potential, and a story still being written.

The Take Stock gala attendees were generous in pledging critical funds to support scholarships, expand postsecondary pathways, and increase resources to ensure that students are prepared for college and have the structure to complete their degrees. The record amount of scholarship donations will be matched 100% by the Florida Prepaid Foundation.

The TSICN board and staff extend their gratitude to our sponsors, donors, mentors, and volunteers who made this evening possible. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Baptist Nassau, our auction sponsor, Bob & Pat Stichweh, and the gala committee members Amy Davis, Shelley Hirshberg, Scott Berglund, and Lisa West, whose leadership ensured a successful gala.

New Students Meet Their Mentors

We welcomed 37 new students into the Take Stock in Children Nassau Program last month where they had the opportunity to meet their mentors for the very first time. The event was filled with excitement as students and mentors connected through fun “get-to-know-you” activities, shared schedules, exchanged contact information, and even captured the moment with a few selfies. Parents also had the opportunity to meet their child’s mentor, helping to build trust and connection from day one. It was a meaningful start to relationships that will grow through consistent support, guidance, and belief in each student’s future

Alisha & Passion

This month's student-mentor spotlight is mentor Alisha Brown and her mentee, Passion Roberts, from Fernandina Beach High School. The two have been matched since Passion started the program in 2023.

Alisha Brown - Mentor

What do you consider to be your hometown?

Fernandina Beach is my hometown; I was born and raised here.

What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock Nassau?

It was Robin Lentz. When she asked me the first time, I declined because I didn’t think I had the time. A year later TSIC had a tent at the Juneteenth event and I signed up. Best decision and my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

How many students have you mentored?

One, Passion is my first student.

What have you gained from mentoring Passion?

I have gained hope and perspective. Passion is compassionate and driven. She is faced with challenges, but she does not view them as challenges, she views them as the next thing on the list. Together we worked through the “what do I want to be when I grow up.” She figured it out and it inspired me to work on my next chapter as well. So, add inspiration to the list.

Passion Roberts - FBHS Senior

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock Nassau?

I wanted to apply for Take Stock because I was looking for guidance, support, and opportunities to help me reach my full potential. I understand that navigating school isn’t always easy, and I knew the program would guide me through that process. Having a mentor also meant I would have someone to keep me focused on my goals and prepare me for college.

What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Alisha?

Through my relationship with my mentor, Alisha, I’ve learned the importance of staying positive and making the best out of every situation. She has helped me develop a solution-oriented mindset and always reminds me to focus on what truly makes me happy. Her support and encouragement have inspired me and made a significant impact on my life. She is someone I will never forget, along with the many lessons she has taught me.

What is your favorite memory from TSIC Nassau?

My favorite memory from Take Stock was attending the graduation ceremony during my first year in the program. At the time, I remember looking up to the seniors and imagining what it would feel like to be in their position. Now that it’s my turn, it feels very nostalgic and reminds me of how fast time passes and making every moment count.

What are your plans after you graduate from high school and TSIC Nassau?

After graduating from high school and Take Stock, I plan to attend the University of Miami, majoring in political science. My goal is to become an attorney, and eventually a judge. My biggest goal is to one day be able to give back to programs like Take Stock that have played such an important role in my journey.
