Dear TSLC Families,

Welcome back! I hope each of you had a relaxing, enjoyable mid-winter break.

We have lots planned for our students over the next few months including celebrating Purim and then a month later Passover. Both holidays make me feel like spring is around the corner.

Just before break we sent each of our students home with a blank tzedakah box, gifted by our TSLC Parent Association. Our hope is that you will encourage collecting tzedakah at home and use the opportunity to talk about this mitzvah. Here are a few pointers.

  • Tzedakah is often mistranslated as charity. It comes from the Hebrew word Tzedek, which mean righteous.
  • Tzedakah is a core Jewish value. As a community, we are obligated to take care of one another. Tzedakah is one of the main ways that we do that.
  • As Jews we are expected to give, just because it is the right thing to do. Giving resources includes both time and/or material goods and not looked at as "going above and beyond".
  • As a Jewish institution, we must instill this value in our youth.
  • The highest form of Tzedakah is where the giver does not know the recipient and the recipient does not know the giver. However, it is wise to discuss your giving with your children, so that they learn to be givers.

Consider helping your children decorate their tzedakah boxes and making it a family project. For those who are inclined, we hope to collect the money on Mitzvah Day (April 10, 2022) and donate it to a local organization.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
