TSLF releases its second workforce study in two years. |
The TSLF Workforce Development and Students Perceptions Survey results have been released. The scope of the project focused on perceptions of students, educators, and employers regarding wage and benefits, promotion and development opportunities, and work flexibility in the tourism and sports management industries. TSLF commissioned a benchmark workforce study in 2022. A comparative analysis of the two studies is now available.
Key Findings:
- 51% of the student respondents reported “very interested” or “somewhat interested” in a career in the hospitality, tourism and/or sports management industries.
- Results show that students believe an individual with the right skill set can do well in these industries without a college degree, which aligns with employers reporting that the highest level of education required to perform entry level jobs in their organization is high school/GED.
- Educators agreed with the student sentiments about the ease of entering and finding a career pathway in the hospitality, travel, and or sports management industries.
- Employers noted customer service and communications skills as some of the top skills desired for employment and promotability.

Discover Travel/Hospitality Jobs Via Microcredentials and Certificates
by Brent DeRaad, President & CEO, Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau
|
Thanks to our educational partners at the University of Texas Arlington (UTA) and Tarrant County College’s Southeast campus, it has never been easier for students to become aware of the many types of jobs available in travel, hospitality, and sports.
In a November 2022 study, Tourism Economics found that more than 13,000 Arlington jobs exist in those industries. The number of local industry jobs is growing with the addition of restaurants, hotels, and the new Arlington Convention Center.
UTA is stepping up in a couple ways. Last fall, it expanded its microcredentialing program, which is free to all students, faculty, and alumni. The certificates span 29 different areas and focus on specific skills for careers in cybersecurity, data analytics, IT support, social media marketing, front- and back-end development, career coaching, human resources and more. All skills are needed by tourism and hospitality businesses.
UTA is also exploring offering expanded coursework in hospitality management based on the growing demand locally. The Metroplex features nearly 130,000 hotel rooms with thousands more on the way to handle the region’s growing number of visitors. We at the Travel & Sports Legacy Foundation are eager to partner with them as they delve into the specifics of what this might look like.
Meanwhile, Tarrant County College’s Southeast campus offers a hospitality management associate degree with students choosing from among three different disciplines: food service management, hospitality/travel and tourism management, or meeting and event planning/convention and group management. Within those degree programs are specific certificates that can be obtained, as well.
Microcredentialing, associate degrees, and certificate programs allow students and those seeking to reskill to explore different aspects of the tourism and hospitality industries without racking up major debt. Additionally, obtaining part or full-time jobs in these fields, while going through these educational programs, can help pay the bills and provide the experience needed to advance quickly into the careers they desire.
