TTC monthly news & updates
President's Message
I am super excited as we embark on another Triathlon season. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, the pace and pulse of this year’s season has shifted from where it has been for the last few years. With the demise of the Raleigh 70.3 and the addition of the Crystal Coast Half and Full, the training interval for many of our club members has already started. Keep your eyes and ears open for the start of social and training activities! They will be posted to the club calendar on the website, Facebook Group and of course, the newsletter.

Last year we sold out our Beginner Training Program so this year we have added a third session. Sign up for the Beginner Training Program is now open. The details can be found further down in the newsletter and on the TTC website. Please share and invite your friends that have always been curious about how to get started in triathlon.

At this time of year, there is so much information we want to share with everyone. Please read through this newsletter, there is a lot of information for you to digest. If you are a Facebook user, our Group page is a great way to get breaking club news and interact with your fellow club members.

2019 Goals and Races
Now almost a month into the New Year, I hope you’re well into your off-season training plan – arguably the most important training you’ll do all year. Have you also set your goals and scheduled your races for the year?

Annual goals vary from competitive to social, from personal performance to new experiences, but meaningful goals share key characteristics:

  • Support longer term goals that are consistent with the reason you do triathlons.

  • Specific and measurable – not wishy washy. You’ll know if and when they are achieved.

  • Challenging but attainable.

Don’t forget shorter term goals as a staircase to annual goals. These are often process vs. outcome related and more controllable.

With goals established you can choose your races. It’s helpful to divide races into categories:

  • “A” races are the select few with performance often tied directly to an annual goal. Your training is designed to produce peak performance at these races.

  • “B” races support your goals and are important but less critical. You’ll probably reduce training load the week before to enhance performance.

  • C races may be for experience, fun, to practice tactics, or test fitness. You can race them full out, but you’ll train through them.

Key considerations when selecting races include timing, location, course characteristics, total cost, available lodging, friends doing the race, and things to do outside the race. Do your research before committing. Prior experience - your own or fellow athletes’ - provides the most trusted input, but there is a plethora of information available on-line. Here are links to sites I visit frequently when researching races for myself or my athletes:
