June 2019
TTC monthly news & updates
President's Message
Ever wonder what the pink bands on our club kit and the hash tag #PinkforLori are about? We have over 200 club members. Some are new and some are long time members. So, some of you may not know that in 2016 one of our club members, Lori Cove, was hit by a drunk driver while riding her bicycle. She was severely injured and is still in long term care. Lori still faces many challenges on her road to recovery. Her care is very expensive, so we are donating a portion of the proceeds of kit sales to Lori’s care.

BTW, Lori has a birthday coming up on  June 17th. She LOVES opening all her mail. So, if you have a minute please drop her a birthday card and make her smile!
Please send your cards to: Lori Cove 600 Fullwood Lane, Mathews NC 28105

News from T3 Tri Coaching

The first 2 sessions of the TTC Beginner Triathlete Program are gearing up for their June races at the Triangle Sprint and 3 Little Pigs Sprint. Our third session sold out and we added a few more from the wait list for our August Rex Wellness Sprint race. We’ve had great participation at our group swim sessions at the Cary YMCA and now have also been enjoying the NW Cary YMCA pool as the team works on their stroke mechanics and endurance. We’ve been out riding, running, and practicing our transitioning skills for the June races crew. The August team is getting ready to go out riding and running as well. And everyone is practicing their heat management techniques and nutrition (especially those liquids). And most importantly, they have been practicing their high fives, fist pumps, sweaty hugs, and big smiles as they prepare to cross their own finish line. We’ll be out at the Triangle Sprint on June 1 st and 3 Little Pigs on June 15 th so if you are racing those, give our beginning team a big shout out, cheer them on, and continue to welcome them into the TTC family.

If you are racing a full or half IRONMAN this year or need help with shorter distances outside of the Beginner Program, please give me a call or send me a note.

Learn more at www.t3tricoaching.com . I look forward to seeing you out training and crossing the finish line.

I’d like to be your mortgage coach
One of the things I love about my work as a mortgage lender is the flexibility with my schedule.  Since I’m often working for my clients at night and on weekends, it is acceptable when I need to take time out of my work day to train.  It was a shock the first time a text message popped up on my bike computer, from a client who needed a preapproval letter.  I had no idea my Garmin linked to my phone - but that text message was motivation to ride harder to get home from that long Sunday bike ride and write that letter!

As a triathlete, you may have a coach guiding your training for a goal race.  I’d like to propose that you think of me as your mortgage coach.  Everything we talk about will always be 100% confidential.  I’ve worked with many local triathletes, but you’ll never hear me mention a name.

My favorite part of this career is coaching my clients through this process and solving what may seem like a challenging issue so they can become a homeowner, particularly if they thought they couldn’t before. For example, A TTC member recently asked how to qualify to buy a home as soon as possible, due to a pending divorce.  This is a sensitive topic, and mortgage financing can be tricky.  But I was able to offer ideas and provide guidance, so they knew what was going to be required, understood the necessary timeline, and we created a plan to make this happen.

There is no fee for my services until I close a loan for you, and those closing costs will be the same whether I preapproved you yesterday or we’ve been working together for months.  I love puzzles, and I see every mortgage scenario as a puzzle, with the solution being the right mortgage for my client.  I’ve worked with thousands of clients since 2005, and I’d be thrilled to have a chance to work with you, or simply give you some guidance gleaned from my extensive experience. Oh, and BTW First person to read this and call me gets one of my new “no whining, just mortgages” corkscrews.)

Stronger and Faster Durham
DURHAM, N.C.—Eight Triangle-area residents and an estimated 50 virtual participants squared off in the Fourth Annual Bull City Squat Challenge Saturday, May 18. Hosted by The Choice Performance Center of Durham, N.C., the event benefited The Duke Cancer Institute and the nonprofit Erika’s Lighthouse and raised $7,000 for the charities.

This year, the challenge featured a series of three rounds; in each set, participants compete for maximum number of repetitions within a two-minute time period. In the first set, known as the original barbell challenge, women squat with 95-pound barbells and men with 135-pound barbells. The second round is tailored to each person with participants barbell-squatting the equivalent of their own body weight. In the final challenge, known as the “heavy squat,” barbell weights increase to 205–250 pounds. Each participant has the option to engage in one, two, or all three of the sets.

“Squatting is one of the most basic human movements. Adding a barbell changes the dynamic of the movement along with the complexity,” says Tyrone Irby, owner of The Choice Performance and one of the participants.

In addition to the on-site competition, the event also includes the 2019 Virtual Bull City Squat Challenge presented by CEP Compression.  This year, local sponsors include Fleet Feet of Carrboro and Durham, CEP Compression (Whitsett, NC), and Triangle Chiropractic. (Durham and Cary locations). The five women and three men competing on-site had been training for weeks in the lead up to the challenge. An estimated 90 percent of participants in the Fourth Annual Bull City Squat Challenge are local runners including one 15x IRONMAN.

“We train for this event for three months, and the challenge itself is a great time,” Irby says.

Since 2015, the Bull City Squat Challenge has raised more than $25,000 for various charities including Girls on the Run of the Triangle and Book Harvest of Durham. This year, fundraising efforts benefited two new organizations. As part of a world-renowned medical center, the Duke Cancer Institute brings cutting-edge research to virtually all outpatient cancer services in a state-of-the-art care facility. Based in Illinois, Erika’s Lighthouse is a nonprofit working to foster greater awareness and understanding of childhood and adolescent depression.
“We opened the training studio in December 2015 with the idea of offering a different training experience along with supporting our local community,” Irby says. “There are so many charity running events in the area that we wanted to create a different challenge as a fundraiser.”
