PRAYING IN TONGUES – LESSON 2

BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

Yesterday I spoke of the importance of praying in tongues. It occurs to me that many believers have never been taught about this, so let us address it.

In John 14:16-17 Jesus said (upon his leaving) that he would send another Comforter to stay forever with us here, even the (Holy) Spirit of truth to dwell with us and within us.

He spoke again of this before he ascended back to heaven to take his place on heaven’s throne with the Father. He said in Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…”  He had just told them to wait for it (the promise) in Jerusalem (Acts 1:4-5) and “ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost…” Thus, the wait in an upper room expecting to receive this baptism of power from the Holy Spirit.

Acts chapter two then records the actual event of 120 believers being empowered by Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 says, “they were all filled with (immersed with) the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues (languages) as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

These supernaturally given tongues were the initial physical sign of being endued with the power of the Holy Ghost. It was tongues (languages) they had never known that they spoke. The tongues were the sign given to show they had received this power Jesus promised.

Why did they need this power? It was so they could fulfill what Jesus said they would do as His followers. In John 14:12 he said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these (that I have done) shall he do….”

What works did Jesus do? He healed the sick, the blind, the deaf, and He cast out demons (devils), and He raised the dead. He said we must also be doing these things, and even more so than He did in the short time of His ministry.

How can we do these things? It is only by the power imparted to us when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit. This is a separate work from the impartation of the Holy Spirit given to us at salvation. It is a second work of grace given to those who earnestly desire the fullness of God’s power in our life.

When you desire more of God’s Spirit, ask Him for it. Jesus said in John 16:24, “ask, and ye shall receive….” Upon receiving, you have power to be an effective witness for Jesus and for doing His work. You also receive through Holy Spirit a special heavenly language for communication in the Spirit.

There have been many false teachings about this in many Christian churches. Some have taught that it is not for today and that tongues passed away when the last of the twelve apostles died. Others have even taught that speaking in tongues was of the devil. These are all lies. Jesus said it is forever, that is, at least as long as man remains on earth.

Paul said in I Corinthians 13:1, “Though I speak with the tongues of (both) men and angels….” Yes, it is languages given to us by Holy Spirit for those who desire a greater impartation of His Spirit. Paul also added in I Corinthians 14:39, “…forbid not (do not forbid) to speak in tongues.”

THE BENEFITS OF BEING A CHRISTIAN

The most important benefit of being a believer in Jesus Christ is our salvation. Without this we cannot enter heaven for eternity. But there are other benefits that belong to us too. Let’s look at Psalm 103

In verse 2 it says, “Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits.” In reading this, we are encouraged to not forget the benefits He has for each of us. As we go on in this chapter, it says in verse 3, “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities…” It is a great comfort to know that ALL of our iniquities are forgiven by God when we repent and invite Jesus into our lives. 

Then it says, “…who healeth all thy diseases.” Now if we believe that the word of God is true and take it literally, which I do, then it means He heals us from ALL of our diseases, including COVID19 and any other plague and disease. Heart disease, stroke, cancer, all have to surrender to the healing power of Jesus Christ.

Verse 4 goes on to say, “Who redeemeth thy life from destruction…” Now that is a powerful promise to know our lives have already been bought and paid for and no destruction can touch us when we believe the promise. It goes on to say “who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies.” To know that we are literally crowned with God’s lovingkindness, and he gives us his mercy brings us to our knees. To receive God’s mercy when we don’t deserve it brings us great joy!

Verse 5 says, “Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things.” This can mean food, but also the promise of his word that we can eat and be satisfied. It goes on to say because our mouth is satisfied with good things, “…so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” That verse is a mighty powerful one for those that need renewing in their body, not from disease, but just from the aging process!

Verse 6 says, “The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.” Just the thought that all that comes against us will have God bring judgment in return, gives us hope for the next breath and the next spiritual attack. If God be for us who can be against us?

These promises are for each believer, but many never receive them. I pray that you receive them, and that your life will be “renewed,” “redeemed,” “healed,” and “blessed”, beyond measure! Read these promises daily and receive each of them by faith.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION



The key words for you and I today are to fully...TRUST GOD. It’s a Biblically substantiated fact to say that we are indeed living in the last days. All one has to do is to look around them; Read the Bible, the newspaper and listen to the news to know that we are indeed much different times than ever before. 2 Timothy 3: 1 says: “Know this, that in the last days perilous times will come”. Therefore, we’d be foolish to go about our days acting as if nothing has changed; When all along we see the definite signs of the times being fulfilled on a daily basis. All that anyone would need to do is to read chapter 24 of Matthew to know of assurance that Jesus IS coming soon! With those facts in mind, we must all like never before determine in our hearts and minds to live our lives each day pleasing to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; And to be ready when The Trump of God sounds...And yes, I do believe we are just that close. I determined many years ago there was absolutely NOTHING worth me missing Heaven for. It’s a personal decision that we each must make for ourselves. It’s obvious we cannot change the evil going on in our nation; And neither can we change their choice to call evil good...And good evil. God’s Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil”. (Isaiah 5:20a) Today we must make a firm decision to pray, to hold our peace and at times to hold our tongue, to take our hands off of everything and everybody...And simply TRUST GOD with it all and through it all. For He really does know right where you are and He will never fail you. Have a blessed day and look for opportunities to be a blessing to those you meet in this dark and confused world; For you never know what they too are walking through.
