WOMAN’S GOD-GIVEN VALUE – LESSON 5
THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN
Proverbs 31 shows how God values a woman of virtue. It also shows how a man must also value her.
The first ten verses give a mother’s instruction to her son Lemuel as guidance for the time he will become king. Then verses 11-31 addresses the talent, value, and indispensable contributions of the virtuous woman. It is a very high value indeed.
Verse 10 says her value is far above rubies; indeed, value above all precious stones, gold, silver, or money is implied.
Verses 11 – 12. She will do her husband good. He can trust her for she seeks his welfare.
She works with her hands to provide clothing and food. She purchases (or sells) land, plants, and tends to the vineyards or fields. Her loins and arms are full of strength.
She also helps the poor and needy. She is clothed with honor. She speaks wisdom and kindness. She is not idle as she tends to all the business of the household.
Where is her husband? Verse 23 says he is sitting idly at the city gate hobnobbing with the other men of the city.
Her children bless her and honor her. Her husband praises her for all she does.
Verse 31 says that she must be given the fruit (honor and recognition) for all she does and what she represents. “Praise her in the gates” means her virtue and value should be recognized throughout the city or community as “gate” refers to the coming and goings of the city.
Doesn’t this scripture show God’s value of a woman? It should also be man’s value, for without her his value is not as much as it would be without her.
