Induction Update
Denise Duewell, Coordinator of Induction and Professional Development
“Good teachers possess a capacity for connectedness. They are able to weave a complex web of connections among themselves, their subjects, and their students so that their students can learn to weave a world for themselves,” stated Parker Palmer in his book The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life (11). This is true for teachers and for our mentors who work tirelessly to weave connections for new teachers so that they may better weave connections for their students.

At our March seminar, mentors and candidates brainstormed ways to check for understanding, to include academic discourse daily, and to write more frequently. This brainstorm encouraged some to add new goals to their Individualized Learning Plans (ILP), which they are completing through the lens of their classrooms. They also made the connection between strategically incorporating these techniques and enhanced classroom management.

Therefore, it is an exciting and busy time for our teachers because they are helping their students to make the necessary connections to be successful in school and beyond, while at the same time working to meet the state requirements for their own ILP. Additionally, our second year teachers are preparing for their TUSD Induction Program Exit Interviews. With all of that happening at once, the support of mentors is absolutely crucial.

The mentors’ job is to guide their teachers forward in the classroom, creating connections and motivating our newest teachers to keep the momentum toward becoming the most talented teachers possible. It is both thrilling and mind-boggling. However, our mentors are very clearly successful with these connections. For that reason, we continue to spotlight our mentors and the wonderful and rewarding work they do! This month’s highlights are Megan Bernard, Josh Ebersole, Eric Hauck, Oscar Zagazeta, Courtney Crooks, Natalie Hayes, and Maribel Romero.

  • “Megan has been so wonderful! She is so organized & well planned. This has made the process so much easier! She is a great listener & gives practical and useful advice that I can use right away. I appreciate that she says things in a positive way, even when it might be a negative issue. She has been vital in making me feel comfortable with my work and reassuring me that I am on the correct path.”
  • “I appreciate my mentor, Josh Ebersole, because he is always kind and willing to help me out whenever I need it. He has answered so many of my questions and given me great feedback and guidance to help me during my first year. What stands out about Josh is his welcoming personality and willingness to help me grow as as educator. Also, he is a very talented artist, and I'm thankful to learn everything I can from him.”
  • “I appreciate my mentor for the sounding board he provides. Eric is a very supportive and non-judgmental listener. He is also very good with modeling his teaching style during normal conversation.”
  • “I would like to thank Oscar for being honest and clear. He was really great in his role and listened to me and my concerns. He was a sounding board for me to get through the process. I am very grateful.”
  • “Courtney is an amazing mentor. She will drop anything to help or listen to a problem I may have. I feel comfortable asking for help as well. That isn’t always the case for a lot of people. She is truly selfless.”
  • “I really appreciate my mentor for being supportive. Natalie is always attentive to my questions and worries. She gives me as much feedback and advice as she can. She is always positive. Something that stand outs for me about Natalie is that she will not stay satisfied if she is not sure about something, and she will seek answers. I’m grateful to meet and to have Natalie as my mentor this year.”
  • “Maribel, I would like to thank you for your support and attentiveness. You have definitely made my first year of teaching less stressful. I appreciate you!”
