TUSD Weekly Update| 4.30.18
We hope you are enjoying this new communications effort designed to showcase and keep you in the loop on all the wonderful things happening in TUSD. Please follow us on social media for daily vs. just weekly updates! Have a story idea? Please reach out!
It takes a lot of effort behind the scenes to pull off an event like the TUSD Student and Staff Recognition Program. Thank you to Administrative Assistant Roberta Cheney and her incredible District Office team--Cheryl Crawford, Julie Tallman, Kimberly Elliott, Connie Cusenza, and Shari Fraga--who helped make this a night to remember for our students, staff, and parents!

Volunteer of the Year
Eric Julien began teaching at Turlock High School in 1976 where he would remain the next 37 years before retiring in 2013. Over the course of his career, Eric taught virtually every science class and was also very active on campus as a club advisor and Department Chair. After retiring Eric has enjoyed traveling, especially a trip with his son Evan to Oktoberfest in Germany where he met up with fellow retirees Mark and Laura de La Motte. Eric has stayed busy after retirement as a member of the Turlock Sunrise Rotary and also played a lead role in advocating for the passage of Measures N & O. His efforts helped lead TUSD into a new era of improving education and facilities that will support students and staff in learning and teaching. Eric misses teaching, especially the student interaction, and working with all the professionals at Turlock High School including teachers, secretaries, custodians, campus supervisors, and all the folks who make a school work. TUSD is grateful for Eric’s leadership and commitment to education in the Turlock community. Thank you Eric for your long service in TUSD!

Meet Ana
Dutcher Middle School
Ana Gomez de Santos has worked in TUSD the past 10 years at Dutcher Middle School where she teaches Spanish Language Arts in the Two-Way Immersion Program. Ana's path to teaching began in her son's elementary school where she volunteered before formally beginning her education in 2000. It took Ana eight years to finish her bachelor's degree as she worked full-time as a para-professional while juggling classes. Ana loves teaching and, counting homeroom, she sees 191 students every day at Dutcher in her four periods of 7th graders and 2 periods of 8th graders. Ana is proud of her educational journey especially finishing a bachelor's degree in a language she learned when she was 25 years old. In her free time, Ana enjoys reading magical realism novels such as Isabel Allende's La Isla Bajo el Mar and is a fan of the National Geographic channel. She also loves animals, writing poetry, and attending symphonies and concerts with fellow Dutcher teacher and best friend Gloria Ontiveros. If you see Ana driving around Turlock don't be surprised to hear the Beatles or Crosby, Stills, and Nash blasting from her car. Thank you, Ana, for helping out the "US" in TUSD!
Last Week in Social Media
Very informative ‪Joint Meeting with TUSD, the City of Turlock, and CSU, Stanislaus. Agenda this morning:‬ Safety, Growth/New Developments‬, Initiatives‬, Collaborations/Joint Partnerships‬, Drought Preparation.
ICYMI last week Cunningham Elementary School celebrated a whole week of kindness related activities culminating in the ENTIRE SCHOOL making a kindness chain around their track which they captured with a drone! Their Inspiration came from Rachel’s Challenge: “Compassion is the greatest form of love human have to offer. I have this theory that if one person can go out their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
‪It’s Turlock Junior High School night at the TUSD Board of Trustees meeting. Thank you to Sufia Burmingham and Yaman Al Krad providing the Inspiration and Flag Salute, respectively, celebrating tonight’s theme of “respectfulness.”
Congratulations to Laura Brem who was recommended and approved by the Board of Trustees this evening for the position of Coordinator of Applied Horticulture and Environmental Studies, effective July 1, 2018. Laura has taught at Pitman High School for the past 15 years and was recognized last year as a State finalist for Teacher of the Year. We are excited to officially add Laura to our team and look forward to her work in developing TUSD’s Farm as an Ag, STEM, NGSS, and Energy Conservation hub to engage our TK-12 students and staff
We love the fun match-ups between Dutcher Middle School and Turlock Junior High School staff. It was a close match but the Diamondbacks edged the Tigers 50-48. We’re recommending lots of ice and two ibuprofen, fellas!
‪The Pitman Pride sure have a lot to be PROUD about today as their new website is now LIVE and ready to showcase their amazing students and staff in a mobile-friendly way. Be sure to check out!‬ ‪http://jhphs-turlockusd-ca.schoolloop.com‬ ‪Never Settle, Never Quit . . . Roll Pride!
