Getting Connected....
an Open House
This open house is an opportunity for parents, caregivers and service providers to meet with many of the community-based recreation, leisure and sport programs that are available for children and youth with special needs in the London region. Meet with the coaches and participants of these programs, ask the questions you have always wanted to know, and meet with other parents that are also exploring different opportunities. Some of the programs that may be in attendance are London Blizzard Sledge Hockey Program, George Bray Sports Association, A League of Our Own Soccer Club, Vipers Cheerleading Squad, Heroes’ Circle Karate, Dance London, Making Waves Swim Program… and others.

Some of our favourite things...
Each edition we will highlight a website or resource that we find helpful, or an article or study we have found interesting. Please send us anything you have found that you would like to see here!
Learning For life Tool
The Learning for Life Tool is a free, online, searchable, decision-tree based catalogue of adult education opportunities in Elgin County, Middlesex County, and Oxford County, including the cities of London, Woodstock, and St. Thomas. To provide you with customized recommendations, the Tool will ask you a series of questions, and recommend local adult education and training opportunities based on your answers.

Disclosure in the Workplace
There was an article recently in the New York Times that got us thinking...it was called 'How to Disclose a Disability to Your Employer (and Whether You Should)'
(You can read the article here if you like, the NYTimes does require that you register to access articles for free). There are a lot of factors to think about around disclosing a disability to a school or employer, and it is a very individual decision. One resource that may be useful to help make some decisions is The 411 on Disability Disclosure: A Workbook for Youth with Disabilities from the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth in the United States. While some of the legal information is specific to the States it has some useful information and activities that are relevant to youth and adults here in Ontario (For specific information about your rights in Canada you can start here)

The article highlighted a website called the Job Accommodation Network
that is full of articles, publications, videos and strategies for accommodation, on a wide variety of topics, including information sheets that you can download to give to others. We haven't had a chance to fully explore it yet, let us know what you think!
