Student Health

The February issue of Pediatrics discusses some of the risks associated with video game addiction, yes, addiction!

  1. It is well known that viewing violent films and TV shows increases the likelihood of aggressive behavior in children. But it is the interactive nature of violent video and computer games which have the most profound effect on children's aggressive behavior.
  2. Some of the other risks of pathologic gaming include:
    1. Depression
    2. Anxiety
    3. Social phobia
    4. Trouble in school
  3. Pathologic gaming is not a "phase" that children will simply outgrow. Once the compulsive pattern of game playing is established it seems to stick.
  4. What can parents do?
    1. Lay down strict rules about what kind of games are allowed in the house.
    2. Be aware of what kinds of games your children are playing.
    3. Impose and enforce time limits on gaming.

Wilson

Donna Wilson

Learning a foreign language can be incredibly interesting and beneficial, especially with a great teacher. One of those great teachers is Mrs. Donna Wilson.

Donna Wilson has been teaching in the district for 38 years. She has taught Spanish here at Tanque Verde High School for the last four years and before that she taught Spanish at Emily Gray Junior High for 34 years. Teaching Spanish here in the district has been the only job Seora Wilson has had. After this current graduation class she will retire from teaching.

Mrs. Wilson has lived in Tucson and the surrounding area practically her whole life, except when she lived in Mexico to learn Spanish. She went to Amphitheater High School and continued her education at the University of Arizona where she received three Masters Degrees in Bilingual Education, Secondary Education, and Spanish. Her curiosity in foreign language and teaching stems from a French teacher she had in high school, who loved being a teacher. Seora Wilson shares the same feeling and says she will miss the students most when she is gone.

She believes the changes and growth that are happening here at Tanque Verde are for the best. Tanque Verde is growing to accommodate the changing needs and growth of its new student body. Even as a small school Tanque Verde High does a good job of accommodating the students needs and wants. Dedicated teachers like Donna Wilson are what help make this school great.

Thank you Mrs. Wilson, we will all miss you.

Barth

Amanda Barth

Amanda Barth is in her second year of teaching here at Tanque Verde High School. She teaches Biology and AP Biology classes.  Ms. Barth has also taught English SL, Bilingual Biology, Computers and P.E. in Korea! Her favorite memory from Korea was teaching sign language to Korean kindergarteners. Before becoming a full time teacher, she was a substitute teacher.  Ms. Barth enjoys practicing martial arts (MuayThai) and also belly dancing in her free time.

Amanda lived in Houston until she was five years old.  After that, her family moved to Phoenix and she spent the rest of her childhood there. In school she was a good student, she listened well and took lots of notes. Ms. Barth was also a bit of a class clown. She went to Central High School and then studied Biology at Phoenix College where she earned her A.Sc. Ms. Barth then moved to Tucson where she studied General Biology at the University of Arizona, earning a B.Sc. Ms. Barth has done multiple research projects on different animals and bugs like bats, hummingbirds, bumblebees, and even butterflies.

Ms. Barth's favorite pastime is to travel; she has been to most of the states. She has also been to China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Mexico and even Canada! If she could travel anywhere she would want to visit New Zealand or Australia. Ms. Barth would also love to travel anywhere in Europe.
